Political conversations surrounding former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai have intensified after a senior aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar publicly defended the embattled politician, praising his leadership style while questioning the circumstances surrounding his continued detention.
The remarks come as El-Rufai remains on trial over corruption-related allegations filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), a legal battle that has continued to generate political debate across Nigeria.
Atiku’s aide praises El-Rufai’s political style
Demola Olarenwaju, who serves as Senior Political Assistant to Atiku Abubakar, described El-Rufai as one of Nigeria’s most strategically minded politicians.
In a post shared on X, Olarenwaju argued that the former Kaduna governor stands out for combining long-term planning with a willingness to personally execute difficult political decisions rather than leaving them to subordinates.
According to him, El-Rufai’s leadership approach distinguishes him from many politicians, adding that he believes the former governor’s continued detention will eventually become difficult to justify if the legal process does not produce conclusive outcomes.
Olarenwaju also expressed solidarity with El-Rufai, saying he remains optimistic that the judicial process will ultimately determine the case.
El-Rufai remains before the court
El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, following investigations into allegations involving fraud and abuse of public office.
On April 13, 2026, the anti-corruption agency presented him before a Kaduna High Court on a revised nine-count charge bordering on alleged financial misconduct and misuse of office.
The former governor has denied wrongdoing and is currently facing judicial proceedings. Reports surrounding the case have also indicated concerns over his health as well as the arrest of his personal physician, developments that have drawn additional public attention to the matter.
At the time of publication, the court has not delivered a final judgment, meaning the allegations remain subject to judicial determination.

Olarenwaju’s remarks are significant because they come from a senior political figure within the opposition camp and reflect growing political interest in El-Rufai’s legal challenges.
