ICPC Explains Arrest of El-Rufai’s Personal Doctor Following Court-Approved Hospital Visit

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has defended its decision to arrest Professor Bello Abubakar, the personal physician of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, saying the doctor is under investigation for allegedly making false statements connected to the former governor’s recent hospital visit.

The anti-corruption agency said the arrest followed concerns that a medical appointment approved by the court may have been used for purposes beyond the conditions of the order.

What Happened During the Hospital Visit?

According to a statement released on Tuesday by ICPC spokesperson Okor Odey, El-Rufai was taken to the private wing of the National Hospital Abuja on July 7 under security escort after receiving court approval for a medical consultation.

The commission said both its security personnel and medical officers observed professional standards throughout the visit. Officials reportedly remained outside the consultation room to protect the former governor’s privacy while he was examined by an oncologist.

However, investigators later alleged that the hospital visit extended beyond the medical consultation authorized by the court.

Facebook Post Triggered Fresh Questions

The ICPC said its investigation was prompted after photographs surfaced online showing El-Rufai meeting with several visitors during the hospital appointment.

According to the commission, images shared on Facebook by Isa Ashiru Kudan, the Kaduna State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), showed the politician alongside Professor Bello Abubakar and three other individuals meeting El-Rufai inside the hospital.

The agency argues that the gathering fell outside the scope of the medical visit permitted by the court and therefore breached the conditions attached to the approval.

ICPC also stated that the professional courtesies previously extended to the former governor had allegedly been abused, leading investigators to take further action.

Why Professor Bello Abubakar Was Arrested

The commission confirmed that Professor Bello Abubakar has been taken into custody over allegations of making false statements during the ongoing investigation.

While the ICPC has not publicly disclosed the exact statements under scrutiny, it maintained that the arrest forms part of an active investigation and that inquiries are continuing.

As of the time of publication, there has been no public response from Professor Abubakar or El-Rufai’s legal team regarding the allegations announced by the commission.

Background: El-Rufai’s Ongoing Corruption Trial

The latest development comes amid El-Rufai’s ongoing legal battle before the Kaduna High Court, where he is facing a nine-count charge filed by the ICPC.

Only days before the hospital visit, the court dismissed his third application for bail.

Justice Darius Khobo ruled that the medical report relied upon by the former governor could not support his request because the National Hospital Abuja reportedly disowned the document presented before the court.

Despite declining bail, the court directed the ICPC to grant El-Rufai unrestricted access to his personal doctors. It also authorized his physicians to transfer him to any specialised diagnostic or clinical facility within Nigeria whenever medically necessary while his trial continues.
