Tinubu’s Road Infrastructure Strategy Targets Security Challenges in Nigeria’s North-East

The Federal Government has linked its ongoing road construction programme to broader efforts aimed at improving national security, with the rehabilitation of key highways in the North-East positioned as part of a strategy to strengthen military mobility and reconnect communities affected by years of insurgency.

Speaking during the commencement of rehabilitation works at Muna City Gate along the Maiduguri–Dikwa–Gamboru highway in Borno State, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu is investing in strategic road infrastructure not only to improve transportation but also to enhance security operations across the region.

Government Links Infrastructure to National Security

According to Umahi, the renewed focus on rebuilding major federal highways is intended to support security agencies by providing better access to remote and border communities where military operations are often challenged by poor road conditions.

He explained that improved transport corridors would enable faster movement of troops, equipment, and emergency supplies while strengthening the government’s ability to respond to lingering security threats in the North-East.

The minister added that the road network would also improve connectivity between Nigeria and neighbouring countries, including Chad and Cameroon, creating opportunities for increased cross-border trade alongside enhanced regional security cooperation.

Why the Maiduguri–Dikwa–Gamboru Road Matters

The Maiduguri–Dikwa–Gamboru route is one of the most strategic highways in north-eastern Nigeria. It serves as an important transportation corridor linking communities in Borno State with border regions and neighbouring countries.

For years, parts of the road have been severely affected by the security crisis involving insurgent groups, making travel difficult for residents, humanitarian organisations, traders, and security personnel.

Government officials believe that restoring the highway will improve access to communities that have experienced displacement, encourage economic recovery, and facilitate the movement of agricultural products and commercial goods.

Road Development as Part of Tinubu’s Infrastructure Agenda

Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu’s administration has prioritised the rehabilitation of federal roads across different regions of the country. The government has repeatedly argued that transportation infrastructure plays a significant role in economic development, national integration, and internal security.

Umahi stated that the current projects form part of a broader national plan designed to improve logistics for security agencies while creating better living conditions for citizens through improved connectivity.

According to the minister, the North-East projects are expected to support both civilian activities and military operations as efforts continue to address the remaining security challenges in the region.

Road infrastructure has increasingly become a critical component of Nigeria’s security planning. Beyond easing transportation, functional highways can improve emergency response times, support humanitarian interventions, reduce the isolation of vulnerable communities, and strengthen government presence in previously inaccessible areas.
