President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, canceled all scheduled events in Lagos, including his attendance at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta, as a mark of respect for the victims of recent fatal stampedes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Okija, Anambra State. The tragic incidents, which occurred at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and a community center in Okija, Anambra, claimed numerous lives and left several others injured. Tinubu’s Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the President was initially expected to observe the boat parade and other festivities of the regatta from the waterfront of his residence on Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi. Dignitaries, including senior officials from the Lagos State government and traditional white cap chiefs, had already arrived at the venue when the President received updates on the tragedies and decided to cancel his participation. In his statement, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the incidents and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. He urged state and local authorities to implement stringent crowd control measures immediately to prevent such occurrences in the future. The President highlighted the disturbing pattern of such tragedies, referencing similar recent incidents in Ibadan, Oyo State. He emphasized the need for organizations involved in public events, especially charitable and humanitarian efforts, to prioritize safety measures and adhere strictly to operational protocols. While offering prayers for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives, Tinubu wished the injured a swift recovery. He also reminded event planners of their responsibility to ensure the safety of participants both during and after events, noting that these mishaps are entirely avoidable with proper precautions. Despite his absence, Tinubu wished the Lagos State government and the organizers of the Lagos Boat Regatta, themed “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” a successful and incident-free festival.
