The Katsina State Government has celebrated a significant achievement in its ongoing battle against banditry and kidnapping, marking a decisive victory with a successful joint military operation that led to the neutralization of notorious bandit kingpin Gwaska and over 100 of his criminal associates. This successful operation also resulted in the dismantling of several criminal hideouts across Katsina State. According to Dr. Nasir Mua’zu, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, the operation was a coordinated strike executed by the Nigerian Army’s 17th Brigade in collaboration with the 213 Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Air Force. The targeted areas included Mununu Bakai, Zango, Jeka Arera, Malali, and Ruwan Godiya, covering the local government areas of Kankara and Faskari. During the operation, the security forces successfully recovered and destroyed significant weaponry, including two machine guns and locally fabricated shotguns, preventing further use by criminal elements in the region. The Commissioner emphasized that this operation has effectively disrupted the criminal networks responsible for terrorizing communities across Faskari, Kankara, Bakori, Malumfashi, and Kafur. In addition to the strike on bandit strongholds, another targeted operation took place on the Dutsen Wori by Dandume-Kandamba Road, situated on the outskirts of Dandume town. The operation, which occurred in the early hours of the morning at approximately 3:45 am, led to the elimination of six bandits, including their commander. Several other bandits were wounded, and a number of them managed to escape. The operation also saw the successful interception and recovery of seven motorcycles that were used by the bandits. The security forces tracked the bandits back to their camp at Maigora/Doroyi in Faskari Local Government Area, ensuring that no casualties were reported among the participating security personnel during the mission. In the aftermath of recent farmer killings, Nigerian Army troops, operating under the umbrella of Operation Fansan Yanma, have successfully dealt a significant blow to terrorist groups in Sokoto and Kebbi states. According to a security source, Zagazola Makama, a series of well-coordinated operations were carried out targeting local government councils, including Illela, Tangaza, Gudu, Binji, and Silami in Sokoto State, and Augie, Arewa, Argungu, and Dandi councils in Kebbi State. These efforts led to the neutralization of over 20 terrorists, dismantling their camps, and forcing them to flee their hideouts. The operations, which aimed to restore peace and security, saw troops sweeping through terrorist strongholds in the Tsauna, Bauni, and Sarma forests. The Army pushed deep into these critical areas, flushing out terrorists, destroying their camps, and recovering valuable equipment. In Sarma Ruga, 20 terrorists were killed during intense combat. Fleeing terrorists abandoned their weapons, hideouts, and supplies, many of which were destroyed by the troops. A significant breakthrough came with the clearance of Manja village, which had been abandoned for four years due to banditry and terrorist activities. Locals have since begun returning to their homes, expressing their gratitude for the Army’s efforts to liberate the area. The troops also discovered and cleared a newly established terrorist camp near Mai Hills, where they found essential supplies and logistics left behind by the terrorists. The operation continued with a push towards Jaima village, a border community, where Nigerien troops were reported to be conducting patrols. Meanwhile, in Borno State, barely 24 hours after attacking Bazir village in Chibok Local Government Area, Boko Haram terrorists launched another assault on Shikarkir Ward of Chibok. The terrorists set fire to the Church of Brethren and several residential buildings. Earlier, Boko Haram terrorists attacked Bazir, killing two siblings, setting fire to the church, and destroying a residential building. The terrorists looted livestock and foodstuffs before fleeing. One of the victims’ family members, Mallam Daniel Shikarkir, confirmed that his elderly parents, aged 82 and 79, escaped the attack unharmed, but their home was completely destroyed. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the incident in a press statement titled “Terrorists Killed in Attack on Sabon Gari in Damboa LGA of Borno State.” The confrontation occurred when ISWAP fighters, armed with AK-47 rifles and using motorcycles and gun trucks, attempted to ambush the military in retaliation for the recent death of their commander and fighters. However, Nigerian troops, supported by the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), vigilantes, and hybrid forces, repelled the attack effectively. During the clash, the reinforcement team encountered an improvised explosive device (IED), injuring a vigilante commander. Despite this, they arrived promptly and overwhelmed the fleeing insurgents. The air component of Operation Hadin Kai further intensified the counteroffensive with precise airstrikes on the retreating militants. A battle damage assessment confirmed that 34 terrorists were killed, while 23 AK-47 rifles and over 200 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition were seized from the attackers.
