Tinubu Signals Fresh Military Pay Review as FG Expands Welfare Support for Soldiers’ Families

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has indicated that members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces could receive another salary increase in the near future, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expected to make an official announcement after ongoing welfare reviews for military personnel.

The development was disclosed by the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, during a military family empowerment programme held at Lungi Barracks in Abuja. According to the minister, the planned adjustment is aimed at further improving the welfare of soldiers serving in various security operations across the country.

Speaking during the event, the Defence Minister recalled that efforts made while serving as Chief of Defence Staff contributed to increasing the monthly operational allowance for soldiers from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000 over the past two years.

He explained that discussions are already underway to introduce another upward review, expressing confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will soon unveil the new package.

According to the minister, the proposed increase reflects the Federal Government’s recognition of the sacrifices made daily by military personnel who defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protect citizens under challenging operational conditions.

The announcement was made during a one-day entrepreneurship and financial empowerment workshop themed:

“Renewed Hope for Families of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Through Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development.”

The initiative was organized by the Ministry of Defence in partnership with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria.

Government officials said the programme is designed to strengthen the financial independence of widows and spouses of serving military personnel, particularly families whose loved ones are deployed in active conflict zones across the country.

Officials noted that while soldiers often spend extended periods away from home performing dangerous assignments, their families equally bear emotional and economic burdens that deserve institutional support.

₦25 Million Distributed to Military Widows and Spouses

During the programme, SMEDAN Director-General Charles Odii announced that the agency had provided ₦25 million in financial support to 500 widows and wives of soldiers serving on the front lines.

The intervention forms part of broader enterprise development programmes intended to help beneficiaries establish sustainable businesses, generate income, and improve household financial stability.

Odii said the initiative aligns with the Tinubu administration’s broader economic agenda, including the previously approved ₦200 billion intervention fund created to support small businesses and entrepreneurship nationwide.
