Minna, Niger State — The Niger State Government has intensified efforts to tackle insecurity with the launch of a 218-member Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and the deployment of 12 newly commissioned police operational vehicles aimed at improving security operations across the state.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago unveiled the new security initiative during a ceremony held at the Niger State Police Command Headquarters in Dutsen-Kura, Minna. The event was attended by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Mohammed Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, the Commissioner for Homeland Security, senior government officials and police leadership.
New Tactical Unit Created to Respond Faster to Violent Crimes
The newly inaugurated Violent Crime Response Unit was established by the Niger State Police Command to provide rapid intervention in security emergencies and strengthen law enforcement’s capacity to combat violent criminal activities.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, the unit consists of 218 specially selected officers drawn from tactical formations and police divisions across the state.
He explained that the officers completed intensive training covering:
- Modern policing techniques
- Tactical operations
- Emergency response procedures
- Human rights compliance
- Professional policing standards
Patrol Vehicles Expected to Improve Emergency Response
Alongside the inauguration of the new unit, Governor Bago commissioned 12 operational patrol vehicles expected to improve police mobility, increase visibility across communities and enhance rapid deployment during security emergencies.
The vehicles are expected to support operations against:
- Banditry
- Kidnapping
- Armed robbery
- Communal violence
- Farmer-herder conflicts
- Violent thuggery
Security experts have consistently identified mobility as one of the major challenges affecting effective policing in many parts of Nigeria. Additional operational vehicles can significantly reduce response times during emergencies and improve patrol coverage.
Governor Reaffirms Commitment to Security
Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Bago described security as a critical pillar of his administration’s development agenda.
He assured the Niger State Police Command that his government would continue providing logistics, operational equipment and institutional support needed to strengthen security across the state.
The governor also commended Olatunji Rilwan Disu for approving the establishment of the Violent Crime Response Unit, describing the initiative as a timely response to evolving security threats facing the state.
Police Highlight Previous Government Support
The Police Commissioner noted that the latest intervention builds on earlier support received from the Niger State Government.
He recalled that in August 2025, the state administration donated five operational vehicles to the command, describing the continued investment as evidence of a productive partnership between the government and security agencies.
Elleman also acknowledged residents who have continued providing useful intelligence, saying community cooperation has contributed to several successful police operations across the state.
Officers Urged to Respect Human Rights
While addressing members of the new tactical unit, the Commissioner of Police emphasized that operational effectiveness must be matched by professionalism and accountability.
He instructed officers to maintain discipline, respect citizens’ rights and strictly comply with police operational regulations, including Force Order 237, which provides guidance on the lawful use of firearms during police operations.

Niger State has experienced recurring security challenges in recent years, including incidents involving banditry, kidnapping and communal conflicts affecting several local government areas.
