Troops Intensify Counter-Terrorism Offensive as Military Targets Four Notorious Bandit Leaders in Zamfara

Nigeria’s military has intensified its campaign against armed bandit groups in the North-West, launching a coordinated air and ground offensive against four of the region’s most wanted terrorist commanders in Zamfara State.

The latest operation, carried out by the Joint Task Force North-West under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, was designed to disrupt what security intelligence indicated was a planned wave of coordinated attacks across parts of Zamfara and neighboring communities. The offensive targeted the camps and movement routes of notorious terrorist leaders Dogo Gide, Najaja, Nasanda, and Buba Oris.

Intelligence-led operation disrupts suspected attack plans

According to information shared by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, military intelligence detected a large gathering of armed fighters along the Bayarzaki Riverline in Anka Local Government Area.

The intelligence reportedly suggested that hundreds of terrorists had assembled under the command of the four kingpins and were preparing coordinated attacks before security forces launched a preemptive strike.

Acting swiftly, Operation FANSAN YAMMA deployed precision air strikes against identified terrorist locations around Barayan Zaki and strategic crossing points along the Bayarzaki Riverline. Simultaneously, ground forces from the 8 Division Strike Force established ambush positions and conducted exploitation operations aimed at intercepting escaping fighters.

Coordinated air and ground assault forces terrorists to retreat

Military sources said the combined offensive disrupted the movement of the armed groups, compelling many fighters to abandon their positions and attempt an escape through the Gummi–Anka Main Supply Route.

The retreating militants were reportedly pursued toward Kombo High Ground along the Anka–Gummi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, where troops engaged them in a fierce gun battle.

Security officials said government forces maintained the tactical advantage throughout the encounter, inflicting heavy losses on the terrorists while forcing surviving fighters to disperse into nearby forested areas.

Casualties and recovered ammunition

Military authorities confirmed that one soldier sustained injuries during the operation and was evacuated to a medical facility in Anka for treatment. Officials also stated that no military weapons or equipment were lost during the mission.

During follow-up clearance operations conducted after the initial assault, troops recovered:

• Thirteen rounds of PKT machine-gun ammunition.
• One additional machine-gun round.
• Intelligence materials from the operational area while maintaining continuous patrols to prevent the regrouping of fleeing terrorists.

Zamfara remains one of Nigeria’s most volatile security hotspots, where armed bandit groups have carried out kidnappings, attacks on rural communities, cattle rustling, and ambushes on highways for several years.

Figures such as Dogo Gide have repeatedly been linked by security agencies and analysts to numerous violent attacks across the North-West, making operations against his network strategically important to ongoing security efforts.

Military planners have increasingly shifted toward intelligence-driven operations that combine surveillance, precision air strikes, and coordinated ground assaults to prevent planned attacks before they occur rather than responding afterward.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA forms part of Nigeria’s broader military strategy aimed at weakening terrorist and bandit networks operating across Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and neighboring states.

By targeting command structures, disrupting movement corridors, and maintaining sustained patrols after combat operations, security forces hope to reduce the operational capacity of armed groups while improving security for affected communities.

Military authorities have not yet released an official estimate of the total number of terrorists killed during the latest offensive, and operations in the area are understood to be ongoing.
