A tragic case of alleged police brutality has surfaced in Kwara State, as a 35-year-old man, Tunji Jimoh, reportedly lost his life under suspicious circumstances while in police detention in Ilorin. According to reliable sources, Tunji, a resident of the Erubu/Asunnara community, was arrested on Friday over a debt of ₦220,000 owed to a friend, whose brother is a police officer. Following his arrest, he was taken to the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) at the Kwara State Police Command. Family members revealed that Tunji was denied bail and left in custody late on Friday. By Saturday morning, they were informed of his sudden death. A source alleges that Tunji may have been tortured in detention as part of a deal involving the creditor and some officers. Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, stated in a press release on Sunday:“The state police command is aware of an unfortunate incident that led to the tragic death of one Mr. Jimoh Abdulquadri, which occurred on December 20, 2024. The deceased was invited on an alleged case of obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of ₦220,000. Discreet investigations have commenced, and updates will be shared as the case progresses. First Kidnapping Attempt Thwarted in Jibia At approximately 7:00 p.m., police officers responded swiftly to a distress call from the Katsina–Magamar Jibia road in Jibia Local Government Area. A group of armed bandits, equipped with AK-47 rifles and other dangerous weapons, attempted to kidnap the occupants of a moving vehicle by opening fire. However, officers from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters, acting on intelligence, arrived at the scene and engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle. The bandits, who sustained injuries, abandoned their plan and fled the area, leaving all 10 victims unharmed. Second Kidnapping Attempt Foiled in Faskari The second incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on the Funtua–Gusau road in Faskari Local Government Area. Armed bandits ambushed a passenger vehicle at Marabar Bangori. Upon receiving the alarm, the police mobilized and engaged the criminals in another gunfight. Overpowered by the police’s superior firepower, the bandits abandoned their mission, leaving all passengers safe. Unfortunately, one victim suffered severe injuries from an assault by the bandits and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital. The victim is currently recovering and responding well to medical treatment. Armed bandits, equipped with dangerous weapons, attempted to kidnap the occupants of a moving vehicle. However, operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters, acting on a tip-off, intercepted the bandits. The police engaged the criminals in a gun battle, resulting in several bandits fleeing with gunshot injuries. All ten passengers in the vehicle were safely rescued. Later the same evening, at approximately 8:30 PM, another kidnapping attempt occurred at Marabar Bangori, along the Funtua-Gusau road in Faskari LGA. A group of armed bandits ambushed a motor vehicle carrying passengers. However, the police quickly responded, forcing the bandits to abandon their plan and flee. The passengers were rescued, though one victim sustained severe injuries and was hospitalized. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has filed a lawsuit against former Senator Andy Uba and two others over alleged involvement in a ₦400 million fraud. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/538/2024, was presented before Justice Inyang Ekwo at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Crystal Uba and Benjamin Etu were also named as co-defendants, with an additional suspect, Hajiya Fatima, reportedly at large. Details of the Charges The charge, filed by Abdulrashid Sidi on behalf of the police on October 10, alleges that the defendants conspired in 2022 to commit fraud by falsely promising to secure appointments as Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for interested parties willing to pay ₦400 million. According to the charges: Evidence and Proceedings George Uboh, the petitioner, submitted evidence, including documents and voice recordings, to substantiate his claims, describing them as “overwhelming and irrefutable.” At least six witnesses have been listed to testify against the accused. However, their arraignment has been delayed until February 18, 2025, due to complications with serving court documents. Challenges in the Case During the proceedings on November 13, the prosecution lawyer, M.L. Anthony, informed the court that the defendants had been avoiding court summons despite being granted administrative bail. He revealed that the defendants obtained a fundamental rights enforcement order in 2023, which temporarily barred the police from bringing them to court. This order was lifted recently, allowing the case to proceed. Next Steps Justice Ekwo adjourned the matter to February 2025 to provide the defendants an opportunity to take their plea.
