Former Nigerian international and Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has urged South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, to return to the nation’s traditional playing style ahead of a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A showdown against the Czech Republic.
Akpeyi shared his insights during a post-match analysis on SuperSport following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the tournament opener. He acknowledged the youthful squad selected by Broos but stressed the importance of leveraging the team’s inherent strengths to revive their World Cup campaign.
“The team is undoubtedly young, and the coach has tried to build a fresh squad,” Akpeyi observed.
“With the tactical approach, the coach aimed to minimize losses and reduce conceded goals. Unfortunately, the strategy resulted in the team facing setbacks, including red cards.”
The former goalkeeper emphasized that a return to a style that embodies South Africa’s football culture and identity could be key to a turnaround.
“It’s time to go back to the drawing board and explore how South African football can shine against the Czech Republic,” Akpeyi explained.
“Achieving a positive outcome would boost morale and strengthen the team’s aspirations of advancing to the knockout stages.”
Akpeyi also reminded that building confidence from the Czech Republic match could protect the legacy established in the 2010 tournament and prevent a disappointing early exit.
“You don’t want the history from 2010 against Mexico to be overshadowed by a poor start,” he said.
“Securing a favorable result against the Czech Republic will restore confidence and help maintain momentum in the group.”
Currently, Bafana Bafana sit at the bottom of Group A and must deliver strong performances against both the Czech Republic and South Korea to keep their hopes alive for the next round.
