The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged members of the National Assembly to prioritize governance and the well-being of Nigerians over personal disputes that could foster division and undermine legislative integrity. This statement follows a recent confrontation in the Senate between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central over allegations of misconduct. NANS emphasized that lawmakers should remain committed to enacting policies that drive economic progress and improve citizens’ quality of life. NANS’ Call for Legislative Decorum In a statement jointly signed by NANS National President, Comrade Oladoja Olushola, and National Public Relations Officer, Comrade Samson Adeyemi, the student body stressed the importance of maintaining decorum within the Senate. “The increasing trend of personal attacks within the Senate is troubling, especially when the country is grappling with economic challenges such as inflation, high living costs, and social instability,” the statement read. NANS reminded senators that their primary duty is to pass impactful legislation that fosters economic stability, social cohesion, and national unity. The association warned that continuous political disputes could erode public trust in the legislative process and expose the country’s institutions to ridicule on the international stage. Preserving Legislative Integrity While NANS reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, it underscored the need for all senators to uphold the dignity of their office. “As representatives of the people, lawmakers must adhere to ethical standards and ensure that their actions align with the nation’s best interests. Personal grievances should not overshadow pressing national concerns,” the statement added. Given the legal proceedings surrounding the current dispute, NANS advised all parties to refrain from inflammatory comments that could jeopardize peace and national stability. The organization further recommended disciplinary action against any senator found guilty of misconduct after due legal processes. The Need for Legislative-Executive Collaboration NANS also called on the Senate President to strengthen cooperation between the National Assembly and the Presidency under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to the association, effective governance requires synergy among government institutions to ensure that the benefits of democracy reach the Nigerian people. “True leadership is tested in turbulent times. We encourage the Senate to rise above these challenges and focus on governance,” NANS asserted.
