Jigawa Assembly Suspends Buji Council Chairman Over Alleged Misconduct, Funds Misappropriation

2 minutes, 43 seconds Read

The Jigawa State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Buji Local Government Area, Najibullahi Falalu Tukur, following allegations of gross misconduct and misappropriation of public funds.

The suspension was announced during plenary after lawmakers adopted the recommendations of the House Committee on Local Government concerning the allegations against the council chairman.

The development places the administration of Buji Local Government under fresh scrutiny as the Assembly begins a formal investigation into the allegations.

Why the Assembly suspended the chairman

The House Committee on Local Government presented its report to the Assembly through its Vice-Chairman, Hon. Sani Sale Zaburan.

After considering the committee’s recommendations, the lawmakers resolved to suspend Tukur under Section 36, Subsections (2) and (3) of the Jigawa State Local Government Establishment Law, 2024.

The provision cited by the Assembly provides the legal basis relied upon for the suspension.

However, the allegations against Tukur remain allegations at this stage. The Assembly’s decision to investigate does not, by itself, establish that the council chairman committed the alleged offences.

Chairman ordered to hand over government property

Following the suspension, the Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, directed Tukur to hand over all government property in his possession to the Vice-Chairman of Buji Local Government Council.

The directive is intended to facilitate the continued administration of the local government while the investigation is underway.

The Assembly has also constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct and misappropriation of public funds against the suspended chairman.

Who will investigate the allegations?

The ad hoc investigative committee will be chaired by Hon. Usman Abdullahi Tura Musari, who represents Guri Constituency in the Jigawa State House of Assembly.

The committee’s membership also includes lawmakers representing the following constituencies:

  • Maigatari
  • Malam Madori
  • Birnin Kudu
  • Yankwashi
  • Kafin Hausa
  • Sule Tankarkar

The committee is expected to examine the allegations and present its findings and recommendations to the Assembly.

What happens next?

The suspension is not the final stage of the matter.

After the ad hoc committee completes its investigation, the Jigawa State House of Assembly is expected to consider its findings and recommendations.

Depending on the outcome of that process, the Assembly could determine what further action should be taken concerning the chairman.

For now, Tukur is required to remain suspended while the investigation proceeds, with the Vice-Chairman directed to take custody of the relevant government property.

Why the development matters

Local government councils control public resources and provide services that directly affect residents at the grassroots level. Allegations involving the handling of council funds therefore have implications beyond the immediate political dispute.

The investigation will be important in determining whether the allegations against the Buji council chairman are substantiated and whether any further administrative or legal action is warranted.

It also puts the spotlight on the role of state institutions in monitoring the administration of local government resources.

What readers should watch for

The key development to watch is the report of the Assembly’s ad hoc committee.

Until that report is considered and any subsequent decision is announced, the allegations against Najibullahi Falalu Tukur should not be treated as established facts.

Further developments are expected to depend on the outcome of the Assembly’s investigation and the recommendations eventually presented to the House.
