Nigeria’s House of Representatives has launched a fresh legislative effort aimed at strengthening the country’s defence system, with lawmakers seeking reforms that could improve the capacity, structure, and effectiveness of the nation’s security institutions.
The initiative was unveiled during a two-day public hearing organised by the House Committee on Defence at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, where lawmakers reviewed proposed defence-related bills designed to respond to Nigeria’s changing security landscape.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, said the proposed reforms represent part of the 10th House’s commitment to creating stronger legal and institutional foundations for national security.
He explained that the bills under review go beyond routine legislative procedures, describing them as a necessary response to the growing pressure placed on the country’s armed forces by multiple security challenges.
Security Pressures Driving Defence Reforms
Nigeria’s security environment has become increasingly complex, with threats emerging from different regions and requiring new approaches from security agencies.
The Speaker highlighted ongoing challenges including insurgency in the North-East, criminal activities such as banditry and kidnapping in the North-West, farmer-herder conflicts in parts of the North-Central region, and separatist-related tensions in the South-East.
He noted that these issues have continued to stretch the operational demands placed on the military, which remains a central institution responsible for protecting the nation’s territorial integrity.
Beyond traditional security concerns, lawmakers also pointed to newer threats including maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea, cyber-related attacks, and links between organised crime networks and terrorism.
