Kenneth Okonkwo Rejects Reported ADC South-South VP Choice, Says South-East Deserves Fair Representation

Former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has raised concerns over reports that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition may select its 2027 vice-presidential candidate from the South-South region, warning that such a move could deepen what he described as the political exclusion of the South-East.

Okonkwo, in a statement shared on X on Monday, questioned the reported direction of the party’s presidential ticket and argued that the South-East has remained underrepresented at the highest level of Nigeria’s political leadership since the return to democracy in 1999.

According to him, the region has not produced either a president or vice president in the Fourth Republic, making representation on the ADC ticket a matter of fairness and inclusion.

Okonkwo Links ADC Coalition Debate to Regional Balance

The politician and former actor said his support for the emerging ADC coalition was based on the belief that the alliance could help build a more balanced political system rather than repeat existing patterns of regional exclusion.

He referenced the sacrifice made by former ADC National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, who he said played a role in creating space for the coalition’s broader political objective.

Okonkwo argued that if members of the coalition were willing to make major compromises, excluding the South-East from both the presidential and vice-presidential positions would send the wrong message ahead of the 2027 election.

The former presidential campaign spokesman said his expectation from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was that his political decisions would reflect his previous statements about creating opportunities for the South-East to participate more strongly in national leadership.

Okonkwo stated that selecting a running mate from the South-East would have demonstrated that commitment.

He added that if the reports about a South-South vice-presidential candidate were confirmed, he would not participate in campaigning for the ticket in the 2027 presidential race.
