Several communities across Lagos experienced severe flooding after days of persistent rainfall, leaving roads submerged, schools affected, commuters stranded, and commercial activities disrupted.

Areas including Surulere, Oshodi, Mushin, Bariga, Ikorodu, Lekki, Amuwo Odofin, and Ojo were among locations where residents reported overflowing drainage systems and floodwaters covering major roads.

Although seasonal flooding is expected during Nigeria’s rainy season, environmental observers note that blocked drainage systems continue to worsen the impact of heavy rainfall in many parts of Lagos.

Why Lagos Keeps Flooding

Experts say flooding in Lagos is no longer caused by rainfall alone.

A combination of rapid urbanisation, inadequate drainage infrastructure, increasing population, climate change, and poor waste disposal practices has created conditions where even moderate rainfall can overwhelm communities.

Plastic bottles, nylon bags, food containers, sachet water wrappers, and household refuse are frequently found clogging drainage channels across the city.

Illegal construction on natural waterways and drainage corridors has also reduced the ability of floodwater to flow freely, increasing the likelihood of communities becoming inundated during storms.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has repeatedly warned that many parts of the country are expected to experience periods of heavy rainfall during the wet season.

Climate experts say rising global temperatures are contributing to more intense rainfall events, meaning cities with poor drainage systems face even greater flood risks.

For Lagos, this means existing infrastructure is under increasing pressure.
