A coalition of Christian and human rights organisations has appealed to the United States government and other international stakeholders to monitor Nigeria’s political climate ahead of the 2027 general election, expressing concerns over reports that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may retain its Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
The appeal, made under the banner of the Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria (CYAN), calls on the administration of US President Donald Trump, the US Congress and foreign diplomatic missions to closely observe issues relating to religious inclusion, security and political representation in Nigeria.
Coalition Raises Concerns Over Religious Representation
In a petition released to journalists in Jos, Plateau State, CYAN argued that retaining the same religious composition for the APC presidential ticket in 2027 could increase political tensions and reinforce feelings of exclusion among sections of Nigeria’s Christian population.
According to the coalition, Nigeria’s history of balancing major political offices across religious and regional lines has long been viewed as a mechanism for promoting national unity in the country’s diverse society. The group believes that moving away from that practice could widen existing divisions if not carefully managed.
The organisation specifically referenced the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, whose joint Muslim-Muslim ticket during the 2023 presidential election generated widespread public debate before the polls.
Calls for International Attention on Security
Beyond electoral concerns, the coalition urged the international community to pay closer attention to attacks affecting Christian communities, particularly in parts of Northern Nigeria.
The petition requested independent and transparent investigations into major incidents of violence reported in states including Plateau and Benue. It also called for sustained humanitarian assistance for internally displaced persons and communities affected by insecurity.
CYAN further appealed to foreign governments to continue monitoring Nigeria’s human rights situation while encouraging measures aimed at protecting vulnerable communities regardless of religious affiliation.
Position on Terrorism Policy
The coalition criticised the Federal Government’s programme of rehabilitating and reintegrating former terrorists who have surrendered.
According to the petition, individuals found responsible for terrorist activities should face prosecution through the judicial system rather than participate in government-backed reintegration initiatives. The group argued that accountability should remain central to efforts aimed at combating terrorism and delivering justice to victims.
Request Regarding Nigeria’s International Status
Among its recommendations, CYAN urged the United States government to maintain Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), arguing that any future review should depend on independently verified improvements in the protection of religious communities and broader human rights conditions.
The coalition also requested an inquiry into claims of possible foreign influence in Nigeria’s political process, alleging that some Arab countries may be supporting efforts to preserve the APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential arrangement ahead of the next election. The petition, however, did not publicly present evidence supporting those allegations.
Background: Why the Muslim-Muslim Ticket Remains Controversial
The APC’s decision to field a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket during the 2023 general election became one of the country’s most debated political issues. Supporters argued that competence and electoral strategy should outweigh religious considerations, while critics maintained that Nigeria’s multi-religious and multi-ethnic composition requires greater balance in the highest offices of government.
Despite the controversy, the Tinubu-Shettima ticket won the presidential election and assumed office in May 2023.
