The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has openly criticized the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, following emerging reports that the governor is planning to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Wike expressed strong dissatisfaction over what he described as inconsistent political behavior, revealing details of past private conversations between himself and Bala Mohammed. According to him, the Bauchi governor had previously made statements indicating a strained relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Recounting events from 2022, Wike explained that shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bala Mohammed personally visited him in Port Harcourt. During that meeting, Bala allegedly emphasized the need for political alignment in support of Tinubu, firmly stating that collaborating with Atiku was not an option for him.
Wike pointed out the sudden shift that followed shortly after that discussion. Within a matter of days, Bala reportedly changed his stance and began backing Atiku instead. This reversal, according to Wike, raised serious concerns about consistency and credibility in political decision-making.
He further disclosed that during a more recent meeting held at his residence in Abuja, Bala Mohammed reiterated his position regarding Atiku. Wike claimed that the governor admitted being aware that Atiku does not hold him in high regard and expressed doubt about receiving support from him. Based on that reasoning, Bala reportedly ruled out joining the APC and instead suggested working towards unity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Despite these earlier assertions, Wike noted with surprise that Bala Mohammed is now allegedly aligning himself with Atiku’s political movement through the ADC. He questioned the rationale behind such a move, describing it as contradictory and difficult to understand.
Wike’s remarks highlight ongoing tensions and shifting alliances within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as key figures continue to reposition ahead of future elections. The situation also underscores the complexity of party loyalty and personal political strategies among prominent leaders.
