Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Split Expert Opinion as Nigerians Await Tangible Relief

3 minutes, 36 seconds Read

Nigeria’s economic reform agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to generate sharp debate among economists, policymakers and political leaders, with growing questions over whether improving macroeconomic indicators will eventually translate into better living conditions for ordinary citizens.

While government officials argue that recent reforms have stabilized key areas of the economy and laid the foundation for long-term growth, critics insist that millions of Nigerians are yet to experience meaningful relief from rising living costs.

The discussion has gained renewed attention as political conversations ahead of the 2027 general election increasingly focus on the economy, inflation, employment and household purchasing power.

Experts Divided on the Impact of Tinubu’s Economic Policies

Economic experts have presented contrasting assessments of the administration’s reform programme, reflecting the broader national conversation about the balance between long-term structural change and short-term economic pain.

Professor Godwin Oyedokun, a Professor of Accounting and Finance at Lead City University, described the reforms as necessary steps toward addressing long-standing structural weaknesses within Nigeria’s economy.

According to him, major policy decisions—including the removal of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange liberalisation and broader fiscal reforms—represent significant economic restructuring efforts designed to improve sustainability over time.

However, he noted that implementation has brought immediate challenges for households through higher inflation, increased living expenses and declining purchasing power.

Oyedokun said although several macroeconomic indicators have begun showing positive movement, many Nigerians have not yet experienced those gains in their everyday lives. He rated the administration’s reforms 7 out of 10, adding that their long-term success will ultimately depend on whether economic improvements translate into higher incomes, job creation and improved living standards before the next national elections.

A different perspective came from Dr. Okechukwu Unegbu, former President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), who argued that implementation has fallen short despite the intentions behind some of the reforms.

Unegbu maintained that improvements in headline economic statistics have not produced corresponding benefits in markets or household welfare. Based on that assessment, he gave the administration a rating below 30 percent.

Political Debate Intensifies Ahead of 2027

The economy has increasingly become a major point of political disagreement.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has consistently criticised the administration’s economic direction, argues that rising living costs and widespread hardship indicate that the reforms have not improved the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

According to Atiku, the government’s reported economic achievements remain largely statistical and have not translated into noticeable improvements in daily life.

In response, the Tinubu administration maintains that its reform programme is producing measurable results across several economic indicators.

Government officials have pointed to stronger Gross Domestic Product (GDP) performance, higher revenue allocations to the federal, state and local governments, improved fiscal management and a better debt service-to-revenue ratio as evidence that the policies are beginning to strengthen the economy.

Background: Key Reforms Introduced by the Tinubu Administration

Since assuming office in May 2023, the Tinubu administration has introduced several major economic reforms aimed at addressing long-standing fiscal and monetary challenges.

Among the most significant measures are:

  • Removal of the petrol subsidy.
  • Liberalisation of Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.
  • Fiscal and tax reform initiatives.
  • Revenue mobilisation and public finance adjustments.

Supporters argue these measures were necessary to reduce distortions, improve government finances and attract investment.

Critics, however, contend that the immediate effects have significantly increased transportation costs, food prices and overall inflation, placing additional pressure on households and businesses.

Latest Economic Indicators

Recent economic data continues to present a mixed picture.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s inflation rate stood at 15.91 percent in June 2026, suggesting inflation has moderated compared with previous highs but remains elevated enough to affect consumer spending.

Meanwhile, the naira traded at ₦1,364.83 per US dollar in the official foreign exchange market on Monday, August 3, while petrol prices in Abuja ranged between ₦1,265 and ₦1,310 per litre.

These figures illustrate the gap between improving macroeconomic indicators and the continued financial pressure facing many households.

Why This Matters

Nigeria’s economic performance is expected to remain central to public discourse over the coming months.

While policymakers continue to emphasise long-term stability and structural reforms, many citizens are primarily concerned with immediate issues such as food affordability, transportation costs, employment opportunities and purchasing power.

Whether ongoing reforms eventually produce broader improvements in living standards is likely to influence both public confidence and political debate ahead of the 2027 general election.
