During the visit, Tinubu and the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, held an audience with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, where conversations focused on cooperation with interfaith organisations. The Nigerian delegation also attended an official banquet at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Nigerian President proceeded to 10 Downing Street, where he met with the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, as part of engagements aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between both nations. According to reports gathered by PUNCH Diaspora Tales, it has traditionally been expected that visiting heads of state formally interact with both the sitting government and the opposition leadership during official trips. However, the Conservative Party leader, Badenoch, was not formally introduced to Tinubu during the gathering held at St George’s Hall. Badenoch, who has Nigerian ancestry, has previously made several critical remarks about Nigeria, including a past allegation that she was robbed by police officers during her younger years. Her repeated comments about the country have generated widespread reactions among Nigerians, especially after she stated last year that most of her life has been spent in the United Kingdom. She had said that although she knows Nigeria well and still has family there, she does not feel strongly connected to the country anymore, noting that her sense of home is now in the UK. She explained that her Nigerian background comes from ancestry and birth through her parents, but she does not personally identify with the country. Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, responded to her statements by warning against remarks that could be seen as disrespectful to Nigeria. His reaction sparked mixed opinions, with some Nigerians supporting his position while others defended Badenoch’s right to express her personal identity. At the royal event attended by several invited guests, including Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage, Badenoch was present but was not officially acknowledged by Tinubu or members of the Nigerian delegation. Also in attendance was British-Nigerian rugby player Maro Itoje. The Nigerian President travelled with a 17-member delegation that included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, and several cabinet ministers such as Dele Alake, Mohammed Idris, Wale Edun, Jumoke Oduwole, Hannatu Musawa, Bosun Tijani, and Bianca Ojukwu. Security officials present at the visit included Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Mohammed Mohammed.
