Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to boosting internally generated revenue through taxation, stressing that the FCT, unlike oil-producing states, depends solely on taxes to fund development. Wike highlighted the backlog of unpaid ground rents, some stretching back 20 to 30 years, and noted that although the current administration has not yet raised ground rent rates, a review is on the horizon. “The President has granted a two-week waiver,” Wike disclosed, emphasizing that no amount of blackmail or intimidation will derail the government’s resolve to enforce what is necessary. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has instructed all government hospitals in Abuja to offer free medical treatment to those injured during a tragic stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja. This directive was announced in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, on Saturday. Details of the Incident At least 10 people, including children, lost their lives, while 10 others sustained injuries during the incident. The stampede occurred on Saturday during the distribution of food items by the church to less-privileged individuals and the elderly in the Maitama area of Abuja. Government’s Immediate Response Minister Wike assured that the FCT Administration would prioritize adequate medical care for the injured victims. Expressing deep sympathy for those affected, he described the incident as a painful tragedy and called for greater precautions in organizing such public events. To prevent future occurrences, Wike directed that anyone or organization planning public distribution of palliatives, including food or cash, must obtain prior police approval. Tribute to Victims and Families The Minister extended his condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for the repose of their souls and the strength for their loved ones to bear the loss.
