The United Kingdom Government has denounced the brutal execution of 38 kidnapped villagers in Banga community, Zamfara State, even after a ransom of ₦50 million was paid to their captors. This tragic event has sent shockwaves across both national and international communities. Gill Lever, who is the Acting British High Commissioner to Nigeria, referred to the gruesome event as a “horrific and inexcusable crime”, noting that it inflicts deep psychological and physical trauma on citizens and slows down Nigeria’s collective progress as a nation. “It affects people’s psychological and bodily health, delays development, and we must put an end to it,” Lever said during a security forum. She also expressed heartfelt sympathy to the grieving families and extended support to the broader population of Zamfara, emphasizing that such violent acts cannot continue without urgent and coordinated intervention. These comments were issued during a media session under the State Expansion Programme for the Anti-Kidnap Fusion Cell—a joint initiative between the UK and Nigeria’s National Counter‑Terrorism Centre (NCTC), designed to strengthen anti-kidnapping operations across multiple states. During the attack, the gang abducted 56 individuals. Although a substantial ransom of ₦50 million was delivered, only 18 of the abductees were eventually set free. Shockingly, the remaining 38 hostages were executed by the assailants. The Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area, Mannir Haidara Kaura, confirmed the heartbreaking incident. He also revealed that those released are currently receiving medical attention in the hospital to treat physical injuries and emotional trauma. They pointed out that numerous farmers are being displaced from their ancestral lands, while urban dwellers continue to suffer significant financial losses due to criminal activities such as banditry and kidnapping. Commendation for Government Efforts The PPP acknowledged that these security challenges had remained unresolved for years. However, they noted that since the current administration took office, there has been notable progress in tackling insecurity. The group commended President Bola Tinubu for his strategic appointments, emphasizing that his selection of credible service chiefs has strengthened national security. They particularly praised the Chief of Defence Staff for his bold initiatives in combating terrorism, which have been instrumental in addressing the security crisis. Call for Unity and Enhanced Security Measures Advocating for national unity, the PPP stressed the need for stronger collaboration among Nigerians to achieve lasting peace. Three notorious bandits were neutralized in a strategic ambush by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Dogon Dawa, Mairiga Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State. The operation, executed on Friday night, also saw several other bandits fleeing into the surrounding bushes with gunshot wounds. The DSS recovered three AK-47 rifles and three motorcycles left behind by the fleeing criminals. Security sources revealed that the successful ambush followed weeks of intensive intelligence gathering, which included monitoring and analyzing the bandits’ communications. This operation is one of many the DSS has recently undertaken across the Northwest and Northeast regions, resulting in the neutralization or apprehension of numerous criminals threatening peace in these areas. Additionally, the DSS has contributed significantly to combating the activities of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in the South-East. According to sources, the intelligence provided by the DSS has been pivotal in assisting the military and other security agencies in apprehending or neutralizing various terrorist threats nationwide. Since the appointment of Mr. Tosin Ajayi as DSS Director-General by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the agency has intensified its intelligence-gathering activities and shared critical insights with sister security agencies. These efforts have reduced ambush incidents against military personnel and contributed to the successful dismantling of IPOB operations in the South-East. A military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, commended the DSS for its covert yet impactful operations under the leadership of the new Director-General. “The DSS has provided invaluable support to the military, and their contributions are essential in our fight against insecurity. The agency’s return to its covert operational style is proving highly effective,” the officer remarked. In a major victory against banditry in Nigeria’s Northwest, troops from the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have captured a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba. Wurgi has been linked to the brutal murder of the Emir of Gobir, Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State. The arrest was announced by Zagazola Makama, a counterterrorism expert specializing in the Lake Chad Basin, on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday. According to Makama, the operation that led to Wurgi’s capture occurred on Saturday. Reports revealed that Wurgi had sustained multiple injuries, including cuts and gunshot wounds, during a clash with a rival group. He was apprehended while receiving treatment at a hospital in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State. “Intelligence sources informed me that troops arrested Wurgi at the hospital after learning he was transported there with severe injuries,” Makama shared. While two of Wurgi’s accomplices managed to escape during the operation, another individual, who had transported him to the hospital using a tricycle, was apprehended. Connection to the Sokoto Emir’s Murder The late Emir of Gobir was abducted on July 9, 2024, in the Sabon Birnin Local Government Area of Sokoto State. After failed ransom negotiations, the Emir was tragically murdered on August 22. “Wurgi played a central role in the kidnapping and eventual killing of the Emir,” Makama disclosed. “The ransom negotiations, which involved demands for cash and motorcycles, collapsed, leading to the Emir’s death.” Wurgi’s Role in Banditry Networks Beyond his involvement in the murder, Wurgi is reportedly a key figure in an extensive arms smuggling network with international links. He is also said to be related to another infamous bandit leader, Bello Turji, through his grandfather. Adding to his family’s involvement in criminal activities, Wurgi’s son, Sani Duna, allegedly serves as a getaway biker for Turji. A Significant Breakthrough The capture of Bako Wurgi is being celebrated as a crucial step in the fight against terrorism and banditry plaguing the region. Security forces are currently holding Wurgi at an undisclosed location while intensifying efforts to track down his fleeing accomplices. Aminu Hassan, a 25-year-old from Dundubus, Daja LGA, has been taken into custody by Katsina State police officers on suspicion of providing financial support to armed bandits in Danmusa LGA and the adjacent areas. On November 19, 2024, the suspect was apprehended while on a regular patrol along the Yantumaki and Kankara highway, hiding two sets of military uniforms in a black polythene bag. In a statement released on Tuesday, Katsina Police Command spokesperson ASP Abubakar Sadiq revealed the arrest. He further disclosed that three other suspects—Lawal M. Ahmad (29), Isma’il Dalhatu (24), and Shafi’u Adamu (28), were apprehended as a result of further investigations. 14 sets of military clothes and one police uniform, according to ASP Sadiq, Authorities retrieved items that were purportedly meant to be delivered to the armed bandits for their illegal activities. He stated that “the suspects have admitted to their involvement in this criminal activity.” In a different occurrence, seven people were detained by the Katsina State Police Command on suspicion of raping four children between the ages of 13 and 14. After a report was filed at the Kaita Divisional Police Headquarters, the suspects—all of whom were Kaita LGA residents—were taken into custody on November 25, 2024. The suspects enticed the youngsters to one of the suspects’ homes, where they sexually assaulted them, according to ASP Sadiq. He mentioned that the detained suspects have admitted to the offences and would face charges in court after the inquiry is over. CP Musa Aliyu, the Katsina State Police Commissioner praised the Command’s personnel for their commitment and expertise in capturing these criminals. In order to help security authorities fight crime in the state, he asked the people to keep contributing useful information. A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Chiamaka Obi, has reportedly been abducted by gunmen along the Niger-Onitsha Expressway in Niger State. The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday as she was returning from Kebbi State after successfully completing her youth service. Details of the Abduction Chiamaka, a native of Edenta in Okwu Etiti, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, was allegedly kidnapped alongside a family of four, a bus driver, and three other passengers. Demand for Ransom Uche Agabige, a member of the Imo State House of Assembly, revealed on Tuesday that the kidnappers are demanding an exorbitant ransom for Obi’s release. Agabige expressed deep concern for her safety and called for swift action by the government to secure her freedom and bring the perpetrators to justice. Call for Action The lawmaker urged the Imo State Government to investigate the abduction thoroughly and also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to address the escalating issue of kidnappings and banditry in Nigeria. “Miss Chiamaka Linda Obi, hailing from Edenta in Okwu Etiti, Orsu LGA, was on her way home after completing her NYSC when she was abducted. The kidnappers have made outrageous ransom demands. I call on the government to intervene and ensure her safe return without harm,” Agabige stated.
