The Premier League has released an official clarification regarding the controversial sending-off of Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon during their Premier League clash against Liverpool at St James’ Park. The governing body detailed why the referee upgraded Gordon’s initial yellow card to a straight red following a VAR intervention.

The incident occurred in the first half of the match when Anthony Gordon made a challenge on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. Referee Simon Hooper initially judged the foul to be worthy of only a yellow card. However, after being advised by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, Hooper reversed his decision and issued a red card.

According to the Premier League Match Centre, which posted the official explanation on social media, Gordon’s tackle was categorized as serious foul play. The report quoted Simon Hooper’s on-field reasoning:

“After VAR review, the referee overturned his on-field decision of a yellow card to Anthony Gordon. After review, the Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge. The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4’s calf. My final decision is a red card to Newcastle United number 10.”

The decision sparked mixed reactions among fans and pundits, with many debating whether the challenge was worthy of a straight dismissal. While Newcastle were left frustrated by the red card, Liverpool went on to win the game 3-2 in dramatic fashion. The decisive goal came in the 100th minute from 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, making him one of the youngest players ever to score a late winner in Premier League history.

The outcome of the game and the decision have once again fueled conversations about the use of VAR and the consistency of refereeing in the English top flight. For Newcastle, the suspension of Gordon could prove costly in their upcoming fixtures, while Liverpool celebrated a vital comeback victory to maintain momentum in their Premier League campaign.
