Pentagon requests $200 billion increase to fund Iran war operations

The United States Department of Defense is reportedly preparing a request for an additional $200 billion budget increase to support the ongoing military confrontation with Iran. The proposal is expected to generate strong debate in the United States Congress, where lawmakers must approve any new federal spending before it becomes effective.

According to a senior official within the administration, the funding proposal has already been forwarded to the White House for review, although final figures are still being discussed internally. During a recent press briefing, U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth declined to confirm the exact amount being requested, explaining that the numbers may still change as negotiations continue among government officials.

Hegseth stated that military operations require substantial financial resources, emphasizing that funding is necessary to maintain operational strength, supply equipment, and support deployed troops. He also noted that the administration intends to cooperate with members of Congress to ensure that the armed forces receive the resources required to continue their mission.

This new request comes in addition to the large defence budget that was approved last year as part of former President Donald Trump’s tax and spending legislation. With the United States national debt already exceeding $39 trillion, the proposal is expected to face resistance from fiscal conservatives who are concerned about government spending, as well as from Democratic lawmakers who are calling for greater accountability and transparency regarding the objectives of the conflict.

Another issue raising concern among legislators is that Congress has not officially authorised the war, which has led to growing tension on Capitol Hill about the legal basis, strategy, and long-term goals of the military campaign. The funding request was first reported by The Washington Post, which cited officials familiar with the proposal.

Members of Congress have already expressed different opinions about the request. Representative Ken Calvert, who supervises defence appropriations in the House of Representatives, indicated that additional funding may be necessary to restore military stockpiles and maintain readiness. In contrast, Representative Betty McCollum criticized the proposal, stating that Congress should not approve unlimited spending without receiving clear explanations about how the money will be used.

House Speaker Mike Johnson also commented on the situation, describing the global security environment as increasingly dangerous, but he explained that he has not yet reviewed the complete funding proposal and would wait for detailed information before making a decision.

The proposed funding increase is expected to lead to complicated bipartisan negotiations in Congress, with disagreements likely to focus on balancing military priorities with domestic spending needs, as lawmakers debate how best to manage national security while controlling the federal budget.
