Ogun Begins Environmental Cleanup in Ogijo After Lead Contamination Concerns

The Ogun State Government has launched a major environmental remediation programme in Ogijo, targeting areas affected by suspected lead contamination linked to Used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) recycling activities. The initiative is aimed at removing hazardous waste, restoring polluted locations, and strengthening environmental oversight across the industrial community.

The remediation exercise follows months of environmental assessments conducted after concerns emerged over possible lead exposure in Ogijo and nearby communities. Government investigations included process audits of ULAB recycling facilities as well as laboratory testing of soil, water, air quality, and blood samples from residents.

Government Begins Removal of Hazardous Slag

Officials say one of the first phases of the exercise involves the removal of lead-containing slag that had reportedly been dumped illegally in several communities surrounding battery recycling facilities.

According to the General Manager of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Kehinde Bello, the cleanup operation is expected to take several weeks because of the volume of hazardous waste spread across different locations.

He explained that many residents may not have been aware of the health risks associated with the discarded industrial waste, making its removal a public health priority.

Authorities say the evacuation is intended to eliminate potential sources of environmental contamination and reduce future exposure to toxic materials.

New Measures Introduced for Battery Recycling Companies

Beyond the immediate cleanup, the Ogun State Government has introduced stricter operational requirements for Used Lead Acid Battery recycling companies.

Under the new directive, ULAB operators are expected to modernize their recycling systems by installing automatic battery breakers. Officials believe the technology will significantly reduce the amount of slag generated during battery recycling processes and help prevent future environmental pollution.

OGEPA’s Director of Hazardous Material Management, Babatunde Lawal, disclosed that the government also plans to begin bio-remediation at affected locations.

The process involves planting specific materials and vegetation capable of absorbing or reducing lead contamination in the soil after the hazardous waste has been removed. Environmental experts commonly use bio-remediation as a long-term strategy to restore polluted land while minimizing further ecological damage.

Officials hope the approach will gradually improve soil quality and make previously contaminated sites safer for surrounding communities.

Regulatory Monitoring to Continue

The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency says enforcement efforts will continue after the remediation exercise.

Director of Inspectorate and Compliance, Tunde Bolarinwa, stated that battery recycling facilities will remain under close monitoring to ensure compliance with the state’s updated environmental standards.

According to the agency, companies that fail to meet the new operational guidelines or violate environmental regulations could face sanctions.
