Youths in Ogun State have called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to prioritize the completion of the neglected Ogun State Polytechnic located in Ipokia Local Government Area. The once-promising institution, which was started during the administration of former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, has remained unfinished for years, leaving the community disappointed. In July 2017, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) approved the establishment of this polytechnic as part of Amosun’s initiative to upgrade the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta to a university. The polytechnic, which was set to offer 42 accredited courses, was poised to provide significant educational opportunities for residents of Ipokia and surrounding areas. However, despite some infrastructure, including classrooms, administrative buildings, hostels, and lecture halls, being partially built, the polytechnic project has not been completed. Upon taking office in 2019, Governor Abiodun reversed the decision to upgrade MAPOLY, opting instead to return the polytechnic to its original location in Abeokuta. Governor Abiodun reassured the people of Ipokia that he would not scrap the institution initiated by his predecessor, promising to turn it into a thriving educational hub. Additionally, he pledged to establish a university campus in the local government area. Despite these promises, the Ipokia youth are now calling on the governor to fulfill his commitment to complete the polytechnic. On Thursday, local youths, holding placards with messages like “Don’t Abandon Ogun Polytechnic in Ipokia” and “Gov Abiodun Fulfill Your Promise,” gathered to demand action. They lamented the deterioration of the site, which has become a hotspot for criminal activity as the buildings deteriorate. Roofs have begun to collapse, and the classrooms, once symbols of hope, are now neglected. Tunji Idowu, Chairman of the Ipokia Youth Development Council, reminded the governor of his promises during a visit to the area in January 2023. Idowu emphasized that the establishment of a higher learning institution in Ipokia would not only improve educational access but also drive economic growth and job creation in the region. Idowu reiterated, “Your Excellency, when you visited Ipokia in January 2023, you assured us that the polytechnic would be completed. You spoke of transforming the project into a fully operational institution that will serve our community’s educational needs. The wife of retired Assistant-Inspector General of Police and former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has been abducted by gunmen in the Arepo area of Ogun State. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday when masked assailants intercepted her Lexus Jeep near her residence. The attackers forcefully dragged her from the vehicle and took her to an undisclosed location. Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the abduction to reporters in Abeokuta on Friday. A serious accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway left 11 injured after a Mazda bus, Mack truck, and Toyota Hiace collided. Learn more about the incident. A serious road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, specifically around the Interchange section, left 11 individuals injured on Saturday. The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) confirmed the incident, which occurred around 7:30 am. Babatunde Akinbiyi, the TRACE spokesperson, explained that the collision involved a Mazda bus and a Mack truck. The truck was attempting to enter a private company’s premises when the Mazda bus, moving at high speed, crashed into it. A Toyota Hiace bus following closely behind also collided with the vehicles due to sudden loss of control. Further details revealed that the accident took place near the Cway junction, a short distance past Heyden filling station. The Mack truck driver had been maneuvering into Cway Company when the excessive speed and impatience of the Mazda bus driver led to the crash. The Toyota Hiace driver, upon noticing the collision, failed to regain control, further compounding the accident. A total of 21 individuals were involved, consisting of 12 men and nine women. Among them, 11 sustained injuries—eight males and three females. Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) promptly transported the injured victims to Idera Hospital, Shagamu, for medical attention. On the Ibafo stretch of the freeway, a gasoline-loaded tanker flipped over in front of a commercial bank, starting the fire. A fire incident that happened early on Wednesday morning in the Ibafo region of the Lagos-Ibadan Expresswayb in Ogun State is claimed to have left several injured and burned several cars and houses. The fire, which was started by an overturned gasoline tanker, was said to have caused havoc in the neighborhood, burning homes, cattle, and cars worth millions of Naira. On the Ibafo stretch of the freeway, a gasoline-loaded tanker flipped over in front of a commercial bank, starting the fire. PUNCH was informed by witnesses that the driver might have dozed off at the wheel, causing the tanker to lose control, tumble, and explode as a result. According to reports, the gasoline spill affected a village about a kilometer away after passing through a drainage system. “I saw the tanker swaying before it fell and spilled its contents into the drainage,” said Wasiu, a witness who was named in the report and who blamed the tragedy on careless driving. It took a while to ignite since several individuals started to gather the fuel. “However, after a few minutes, a fire broke out from the other side of the expressway and quickly escalated. Four tipper trucks parked at the Osadol Fuel Station were destroyed, and the fire spread into the nearby community.” Another resident of the area identified as Tunde Adewumi, said that When the fire got to many of the locals, many were asleep.
