Hundreds of property owners and occupants in a neighbourhood located in the Ojo axis of Lagos State on Thursday organised a peaceful protest over what they described as a planned demolition of more than 300 residential buildings for a railway infrastructure project reportedly linked to the Lagos urban transport expansion. The demonstrators moved through several streets within the community while displaying placards calling on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to step in and review the situation before any action is taken. According to the protesters, the proposed demolition exercise could lead to the displacement of thousands of people and may affect residential houses, churches, mosques, medical centres, shops, and other small businesses operating in the area. Residents insisted that the proposed action is unfair and does not follow proper legal procedures. They alleged that officials have been intimidating occupants and ignoring a court directive which they claim stopped the demolition from taking place. Speaking on behalf of the affected community, the coordinator of the residents’ group, Iniobong Offiong, explained that the location consists of four different estates containing about 315 buildings with an estimated population of roughly 20,000 inhabitants. He stated that the estates were developed gradually over many years and currently serve as the only homes for many families. He further claimed that government representatives, accompanied by security officers, visited the neighbourhood in May 2025 under the claim that they were carrying out a population count. Residents later received information that the land had already been marked for acquisition and demolition. Authorities were said to have justified the decision by stating that the land is required for a proposed train depot connected to the Lagos rail transport project, which is part of the wider effort to improve public transportation in the state. However, the community leadership questioned the explanation, arguing that a large portion of land previously obtained for the same rail project by an earlier administration is still unused, raising concerns about why another fully developed settlement should be affected. Offiong stated that residents were informed their buildings could be removed within a short period of time despite the existence of alternative land already reserved for the same purpose. He maintained that extending the project into an already populated environment without clear justification is unacceptable. The community also revealed that several petitions have been sent to different authorities, including the Lagos State Government, security agencies, and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, but no definite response has been received, which led residents to seek legal protection. According to him, the residents obtained an interim order from the Federal High Court directing that the demolition should not proceed until the matter is resolved. Despite this, he alleged that officials have continued to enter the area with security personnel to carry out inspections and collect information about private properties, an action the community described as disrespect for the rule of law. He also claimed that there have been attempts to reduce resistance among residents, including reports that some tenants were persuaded to leave the area, while there were also complaints of power supply interruptions believed to be linked to the ongoing dispute. One elderly resident, who said he is close to 75 years old, described the situation as emotionally difficult, explaining that many people living in the area do not have another place to move to if the demolition happens. He added that any form of compensation should be enough to allow affected persons to obtain another property within Lagos, otherwise the process would be considered unfair. Members of the community also raised humanitarian concerns, noting that the neighbourhood is home to elderly citizens, widows, and children who may become homeless if the demolition is carried out. The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted smuggled goods valued at ₦1.35 billion across different parts of Ogun State, while also transferring 2,547 parcels of Cannabis Sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Idiroko Special Command. According to the command, the seized contraband items included 2,539 kegs of vegetable oil, 4,325 cartons of foreign spaghetti, 1,204 bags of imported parboiled rice, 545 kegs of petrol, 13 used tyres, 50 bags of imported sugar, two used vehicles, and several other prohibited goods smuggled into the country through illegal routes. The Acting Customs Area Controller, Olukayode Afeni, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the command headquarters on Monday. He explained that the illegal goods were brought into Nigeria through unapproved border routes, waterways, and creeks, which smugglers often use to bypass official checkpoints. Afeni stated that the operation reflects the command’s strong determination to combat smuggling activities, protect the local economy, and prevent illegal goods from entering the Nigerian market. He noted that the seized cannabis handed over to the NDLEA consisted of 2,055 coconut-sized parcels weighing 710 kg and 15 bread-sized parcels weighing 381 kg. Speaking further, he revealed that officers acting on credible intelligence reports intercepted a truck around the Agbara axis on March 11, 2026, with registration number APP-740-YD, which was loaded with 2,539 kegs of vegetable oil, each containing 25 litres. The development, according to the command, confirms a growing pattern in the illegal importation of essential food commodities. Afeni assured the public that the command, with full support from the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, remains committed to eliminating smuggling of vegetable oil, rice, fuel, and other prohibited goods, stressing that the Ogun command is strategically positioned to stop illegal activities along the border. Ortiz is currently being detained with bail set at $1,875,000, and she could face a possible life sentence if convicted of the charges she now faces. Law enforcement continues to investigate Ortiz’s motive for targeting the residence. The shooting occurred while Rihanna and her partner, rapper A$AP Rocky, were present at the property, according to reporting by CBS News. The Shooting and Arrest Los Angeles police allege that Ortiz arrived at Rihanna’s mansion in a white Tesla, drove up to the front of the estate, and fired multiple rounds at the building before fleeing the scene. Personnel of the Chief of Army Staff Special Intervention Battalion 7, working alongside the 8 Division Strike Team under the Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, successfully neutralised several terrorists during a tactical mission carried out in Kadam Forest. The development was disclosed in an official statement released by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8 Division, Nigerian Army / Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA. According to the statement, the successful operation followed actionable intelligence and a well-coordinated engagement with a dangerous terrorist network linked to the Lakurawa terrorist group operating around Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Security intelligence reports indicated that more than one hundred terrorists had gathered deep inside the Kadam Forest area. The gathering was reportedly intended for planning coordinated attacks on surrounding communities as well as organising kidnapping activities. The group was also believed to be arranging the relocation of abducted victims to different hideouts within the forest. However, the planned operations of the terrorists were disrupted after military personnel acted swiftly upon receiving the intelligence report. Troops quickly mobilised and strategically moved to intercept the criminal group before their plans could be executed. A fierce and prolonged exchange of gunfire followed after the troops made contact with the armed group. During the confrontation, the terrorists attempted to execute a rear-flanking manoeuvre in an effort to outmanoeuvre the soldiers. Despite the attempt, the troops maintained control of the situation by deploying superior firepower and coordinated tactical response. The soldiers sustained operational dominance throughout the engagement, successfully preventing the terrorists from gaining any advantage during the clash. As a result of the encounter, three terrorists were confirmed neutralised, while several others were believed to have suffered gunshot injuries as they fled the scene into the forest environment. Military personnel also recovered a number of weapons and operational items from the location after the confrontation. The recovered materials include one PKT machine gun, two AK-47 rifles, 350 rounds of PKT ammunition, 111 rounds of 7.62 special ammunition, three rifle magazines, two communication radios, three motorcycles and a mobile phone believed to have been used by members of the group. The operation represents another effort by security forces to disrupt the activities of terrorist networks operating in parts of north-western Nigeria and to improve safety for communities affected by insurgent and kidnapping activities.
