Iran launched missiles toward joint US-UK military base in Indian Ocean – Report

Iran reportedly fired two ballistic missiles in the direction of the joint United States–United Kingdom military facility located on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean, according to a report published by the The Wall Street Journal on Friday, which cited statements from American defense officials.

According to the report, neither of the missiles successfully struck the intended location. The base is situated roughly 2,500 miles (about 4,000 kilometres) away from Iranian territory. However, the missile launch indicates that Tehran may possess longer-range missile capability than previously estimated by Western intelligence analysts. Officials familiar with the matter suggested that the test could demonstrate improvements in Iran’s ballistic technology and operational reach.

The United States Department of Defense declined to provide any official response regarding the incident when contacted, maintaining its usual policy of not discussing sensitive military intelligence matters.

Sources cited in the report explained that one of the missiles malfunctioned during flight before reaching its destination, while the second projectile was reportedly engaged by a defensive interceptor launched from a United States naval vessel stationed in the region. It remains uncertain whether the interceptor successfully destroyed the incoming missile, as no confirmed impact report has been released.

Diego Garcia, located within the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, is regarded as one of the most strategically important overseas military installations used jointly by the United States and the United Kingdom. The facility plays a key role in long-range military logistics, surveillance operations, and regional defense coordination across Asia and the Middle East.

The island is one of the bases Britain currently permits the United States to operate for defensive and strategic missions connected to tensions involving Iran. Over the years, American forces have deployed long-range bombers, surveillance aircraft, and other military assets to the installation, making it a central hub for operations across Asia, including previous US air campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Britain has also reached an agreement to return sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after maintaining control of the territory since the 1960s. Despite the planned transfer, the United Kingdom will continue leasing the Diego Garcia base for military purposes, allowing the joint facility to remain operational for future security activities. The island is the largest in the archipelago and remains the most significant military site in the region.

The recent missile launch highlights growing security concerns in the Indian Ocean region and raises fresh questions about the range and capability of Iran’s missile program. Defense analysts believe the development could influence future military planning by Western allies and may lead to increased monitoring of long-range weapon tests in the region.
