South Korea originally designed the Cheongung-II missile defence platform to counter threats from North Korea. However, recent conflict situations in the Middle East have shown the system performing against Iranian missile attacks, placing Seoul among the fastest-growing defence technology suppliers in the global market.
The Cheongung-II, also called KM-SAM Block II, is a medium-range surface-to-air interceptor created to destroy incoming ballistic missiles and aerial threats. Reports indicate that the system achieved an interception success rate close to 96 percent during operations involving missiles launched toward the United Arab Emirates.
Military analysts noted that the performance of the Korean interceptor rivalled, and in certain scenarios exceeded, the effectiveness of the American Patriot missile defence platform. One major factor attracting international attention is the cost difference, as the South Korean system is estimated to be available at roughly one-third of the price of comparable US equipment.
This balance between reliability in real combat situations and significantly lower pricing has increased global demand. Earlier this month, a United Arab Emirates Air Force C-17 transport aircraft arrived in Daegu to collect additional interceptor missiles, highlighting the urgent need for the technology in the Gulf region.
The Cheongung-II system proved its operational capability under real battlefield conditions, prompting Abu Dhabi to request more units sooner than originally planned.
Security experts say that rising concerns over missile and drone attacks across the Middle East have limited the number of countries capable of delivering modern air defence systems quickly, leaving South Korea in a strong position as a supplier.
The interceptor battery is designed for efficiency and fast deployment. A standard unit includes multiple launcher vehicles, each fitted with several missile tubes, supported by advanced radar equipment and a central engagement control station.
The system has a range of roughly forty kilometres and can intercept targets flying below fifteen kilometres in altitude. This range fits the typical flight profile of many ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles used in recent conflicts.
Often described as a missile designed to destroy other missiles, the Cheongung-II was created to operate inside a layered air defence structure. It can integrate with American and NATO-compatible platforms, allowing countries to deploy it without major modification to existing defence networks.
The United Arab Emirates had already received part of its order before tensions in the region increased. Saudi Arabia and Iraq have also signed agreements to purchase the system, while the UAE alone placed orders for multiple batteries under earlier contracts.
After the recent interception results became known, the UAE requested faster delivery of the remaining systems and additional interceptor missiles. Reports indicated that a batch of missiles was urgently transported from South Korea to strengthen Gulf air defence capability.
South Korean officials explained that accelerating production is difficult due to earlier commitments and limited manufacturing capacity. Some of the missiles sent abroad were originally planned for domestic defence use, which may temporarily affect readiness against potential threats from North Korea.
During diplomatic discussions following these deliveries, the United Arab Emirates reportedly promised priority crude oil supply to South Korea, a move widely seen as a reciprocal gesture for the rapid missile support provided.
Government representatives confirmed that the agreement includes millions of barrels of oil, enough to cover several days of national demand, strengthening economic cooperation alongside defence ties.
Industry analysts believe that the exchange shows how defence technology agreements can influence energy partnerships and broader strategic relationships.
For Hanwha Aerospace, one of the main companies involved in the Cheongung-II programme, the successful combat performance has generated strong interest from additional countries in the Middle East and other regions.
The attention is not limited to a single interceptor. South Korea is presenting itself as a provider of a complete air defence structure, including systems designed for different altitude levels and threat types.
At shorter ranges, the K30 Biho platform uses rapid-fire guns to stop drones and low-flying aircraft. At higher altitudes, the L-SAM interceptor, currently under development, is intended to destroy ballistic threats at extreme heights and is often compared to advanced US missile defence systems.
Some Gulf countries have reportedly shown interest in the L-SAM even before it enters full production, demonstrating growing confidence in Korean defence technology.
Experts also note increasing demand for future-focused solutions such as directed-energy weapons and laser defence systems, which can counter large numbers of inexpensive drones used in modern warfare.
The development of Cheongung-II began more than a decade ago under South Korea’s defence research programme, with major aerospace and electronics companies working together to create an independent interceptor capability.
The goal was to replace older imported missile systems and build technology suited specifically to regional threats. After several years of testing, the platform entered service and later moved into full-scale production, placing South Korea among the few nations capable of manufacturing advanced surface-to-air missile systems without foreign assistance.
Over the past few years, South Korea has recorded tens of billions of dollars in defence exports, supported not only by the Cheongung-II but also by tanks, artillery systems, and combat aircraft sold to countries in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
One reason for the success is that delivery schedules are often faster than those offered by traditional suppliers. Contracts usually include flexible maintenance terms, technology-transfer options, and competitive pricing compared with American and European manufacturers.
Another advantage is compatibility with existing NATO and US military equipment, allowing buyers to integrate Korean systems without expensive redesign of their defence networks.
Analysts say the Cheongung-II programme represents an important step in South Korea’s plan to become one of the world’s leading exporters of defence equipment by the end of the decade.
With continued investment in artificial intelligence, unmanned systems, and next-generation weapons, the country aims to strengthen its position in the global security industry.
Recent emergency deliveries from Daegu to the Middle East suggest that this goal is becoming increasingly realistic as demand for reliable and affordable missile defence technology continues to grow.
