Manchester United icon, Paul Scholes, has publicly disagreed with former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson over recent remarks suggesting that Manchester United should organize a victory parade if they clinch the UEFA Europa League title this season.
Scholes criticized the notion, describing it as inappropriate and humiliating given the Red Devils’ underwhelming performance in the English Premier League throughout the current campaign.
Earlier, Merson made headlines on Sky Sports, asserting that it would be arrogant of Manchester United not to plan a celebratory event in the event of their Europa League triumph.
“Trophies don’t come frequently. Manchester United are far behind where they should be. Enjoy the wins while they last. Not having a parade feels like arrogance. I would definitely want one,” Merson stated.
In a counter-opinion published in his TNT Sports column, Scholes sharply disagreed:
“There’s absolutely no justification for organizing a parade just for winning the Europa League. It would honestly be quite embarrassing.”
The former midfielder emphasized that the real reward for lifting the Europa League title lies in the automatic qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, which would not only improve the club’s financial situation but also enhance their ability to attract top-tier talent during the summer transfer window.
Manchester United are set to face Tottenham Hotspur in what is expected to be a high-stakes Europa League final showdown this Wednesday.
