The report provides a detailed assessment of the global workforce, revealing that although employment numbers have not collapsed, job quality is deteriorating and inequality is widening. It analysed how productivity levels, demographic shifts, and ongoing economic pressures are shaping the future of work and slowing progress toward inclusive growth. One of the most troubling findings highlighted by the ILO is the persistence of working poverty. Nearly 300 million workers worldwide still live in extreme poverty, earning less than $3 per day, even while being employed. In addition, the report noted a continued rise in informal employment, with an estimated 2.1 billion workers expected to be in informal jobs by 2026, lacking social protection and job security. ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo cautioned that steady growth figures and stable unemployment rates should not create a false sense of success. He emphasized that hundreds of millions of workers remain trapped in poverty, informal work, and social exclusion, particularly in low-income countries. Houngbo pointed out that the slow pace of progress in poorer economies is deepening inequality, pushing those with the weakest employment conditions even further behind. ENUGU — For many residents across Nigeria’s South-East region, the year 2025 will remain deeply associated with severe economic pressure and widespread hardship. Residents described the year as one of the most difficult periods in recent history, particularly for artisans, petty traders, and low-income earners who were frequently harassed, displaced, and subjected to multiple forms of taxation by some state authorities. Several individuals recounted painful experiences, explaining that 2025 was emotionally and financially draining. They called on state governments within the region to design people-focused programmes that would directly improve livelihoods and reflect the substantial allocations and revenues received by the states. People Survived 2025 Through Faith and Hard Work — Bishop Nwokolo Speaking on the situation, the Bishop of the Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion, Onitsha, Anambra State, Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo, acknowledged that the economic conditions of 2025 were extremely harsh and difficult to bear. According to the bishop, many residents survived not because of government support, but due to personal resilience, determination, and strong faith in God. Bishop Nwokolo, who is well known for advocating for the welfare of artisans, petty traders, and low-income earners, said people learned to rely on themselves after realizing that little or no assistance would come from government institutions. He explained that many individuals took control of their destiny, working tirelessly despite unfavorable economic, political, and social realities. “As people of faith, we believed that things would eventually work out. We worked diligently and refused to be overwhelmed by fear. God encouraged us not to be afraid, and we embraced 2025 with courage and purpose. We did not depend on the government,” he stated. The bishop further emphasized that despite the crushing economic environment, people survived through perseverance and dedication. However, he urged government authorities at all levels to prioritize policies that would genuinely improve citizens’ lives. He expressed hope that future years would offer better prospects, where hard work would be rewarded with visible productivity and improved living standards. According to him, although people laboured tirelessly in 2025, government efforts were insufficient to allow citizens enjoy the rewards of their work. He stressed that rather than focusing on foreign travels and external admiration, leaders should channel their energy into developing Nigeria. “The coming year should be about fixing things at home, not admiring progress elsewhere. If leaders commit to local development, Nigeria will overcome its challenges and prosper,” he concluded. “So Much Suffering” — Voices From Imo State In Owerri, Imo State, residents expressed overwhelming dissatisfaction with the year 2025, describing it as a period filled with frustration and disappointment. One resident, Chikwe Osuji Nnamdi, stated that surviving the year alone was an achievement. “Anyone who made it through 2025 has endured unimaginable suffering. The hardship was extreme. Everything felt difficult and uncertain.” He highlighted the collapse of public electricity supply, noting that power availability was nearly nonexistent, yet electricity bills continued to rise. This situation, he explained, forced many households and small businesses into serious hardship. According to him, people who depended on electricity for their livelihood were pushed out of business, while families struggled to preserve food due to lack of refrigeration. He further noted that inflation reached alarming levels, food prices skyrocketed, and job opportunities were almost impossible to find, even as the country continued to produce millions of graduates annually. “We Were Deceived” — Widow Speaks on Living Conditions For Mrs. Chinwendu Nwaiwu, a widow and mother of four, the suffering of 2025 went beyond the rising cost of living. She accused the government of failing to account for the savings reportedly generated from the removal of petrol subsidy. She questioned why basic infrastructure, especially in health facilities, remained neglected. According to her, many hospitals and health centres still relied on kerosene lamps and rechargeable torches, a situation she described as unacceptable in modern times. She also expressed concern about the poor quality of medical care available to ordinary citizens, emphasizing that the hardship affected both health and survival.

The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to placing children’s welfare and education at the centre of governance, describing it as the surest path to building a progressive, secure, and dignified future for the state. Governor Mbah emphasised that the wellbeing, protection, and education of children remain non-negotiable priorities for his government, stressing that any society that neglects its children ultimately jeopardises its own future. According to him, sustained investments in education and child development are deliberate strategies aimed at long-term prosperity rather than short-term political gains. In the same vein, the governor restated his administration’s firm stance against all forms of child abuse, including child marriage, sexual exploitation, child labour, child trafficking, and other violations of children’s rights. He warned that such acts would not be tolerated under any circumstances in Enugu State. Governor Mbah made these remarks while receiving members of the Enugu State Children’s Parliament, led by their Speaker, Miss Chimamanda Amobi, during a courtesy visit to the Government House on Tuesday. He disclosed that his government has consistently allocated more than 30 per cent of the state’s budgets for 2024, 2025, and 2026 to the education sector. According to him, any society that fails to invest adequately in the education and welfare of its children has already compromised its destiny. Addressing the young parliamentarians, Mbah described them as the embodiment of Enugu State’s dreams and aspirations. He noted that their visit served as a reminder of the responsibility of leadership to create an environment where every child can learn, develop, and succeed without limitations. “Our slogan is ‘Tomorrow is Here,’ and that tomorrow is you. You represent the future we talk about, the future we can see and nurture. You are at the core of our governance philosophy,” he stated. He explained that all government initiatives and infrastructure projects are deliberately designed around the needs of children, noting that they are the most valuable investment any government can make. “In Enugu State, our vision is future-driven, and that future is defined by how well we prepare our children today — how we protect them, educate them, and empower them to take responsibility tomorrow,” Mbah said. While acknowledging that the full benefits of his administration’s massive investments in education — particularly the construction of 260 Smart Green Schools across the state — may only become evident years after his tenure, the governor stressed that his focus remains on equipping Enugu children for relevance in the emerging global economy rather than seeking applause. He reiterated that free and quality education is a fundamental right of every child in Enugu State, not a privilege. He explained that beyond the UNESCO-recommended nine years of basic education, his administration has expanded free education to cover 12 years, spanning from early childhood to senior secondary level. According to the governor, this policy covers all essential learning needs, including school uniforms, writing materials, and one nutritious meal daily, ensuring that no child is excluded due to financial constraints. Governor Mbah described the Smart Green Schools as innovation-driven learning environments designed to help children discover and maximise their God-given talents while expressing the best versions of themselves. He further explained that the schools are equipped with modern learning facilities aimed at preparing students for the realities of the 21st century. These include robotics laboratories, artificial intelligence programmes, mechatronics, virtual and augmented reality tools, ICT hubs, and digital libraries, enabling Enugu children to compete favourably with their peers anywhere in the world. Beyond academic and technological development, the Smart Green Schools initiative also prioritises children’s health and physical growth. The governor disclosed that each school is fitted with a clinic where a child’s health and immunisation status is assessed by a qualified nurse upon admission at the age of three. Any missed vaccinations are promptly addressed to ensure optimal health outcomes. “To prevent malnutrition, every Smart Green School provides one balanced and nutritious meal daily to each child,” he added. Governor Mbah also urged children across the state to uphold values traditionally associated with Enugu people, including honesty, fairness, humility, and the fear of God, describing these virtues as essential foundations for responsible leadership and citizenship. He issued a stern warning that anyone found guilty of subjecting a child to abuse in any form would face the full weight of the law, noting that his administration has zero tolerance for such acts. “Recently, we intervened to stop the marriage of an underage girl, and the parents involved will be prosecuted. Such actions are completely unacceptable in Enugu State,” he declared. Earlier in her remarks, the Speaker of the Enugu State Children’s Parliament, Miss Chimamanda Amobi, made a passionate appeal for increased investments in children’s welfare and education by all tiers of government in Nigeria. Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have formally withdrawn their support for the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, opting instead for political dialogue as a pathway to resolving the prolonged crisis in the state. This development follows the initiation of impeachment proceedings last Thursday, when 26 lawmakers, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, submitted a notice of allegations accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct. Following the presentation of the notice, the Assembly adjourned its plenary sitting until Wednesday, January 15, 2026, a decision that further intensified political tension across Rivers State. Earlier in the week, on Monday, the Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo, who represents Omuma Constituency, alongside Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency, publicly announced their withdrawal from the impeachment process during a press briefing held in Port Harcourt. Both lawmakers called for calm and encouraged a peaceful political settlement rather than a confrontational removal process. On Wednesday, the momentum toward dialogue continued as two more legislators — Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi representing Obio/Akpor Constituency II — also announced their decision to pull out of the impeachment proceedings. They made this declaration at a separate press conference, aligning themselves with calls for reconciliation. Speaking on behalf of themselves, Sylvanus Nwankwo and Emilia Amadi acknowledged that the impeachment process was initially justified, citing repeated violations of constitutional provisions by the governor and his deputy. However, they explained that recent interventions and appeals had prompted a reassessment of their stance. According to them, interventions by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, appeals from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and consistent calls from concerned Rivers State residents influenced their decision to explore political solutions rather than pursue impeachment to its conclusion. They stated clearly that their decision did not represent the collective position of the House but was based on personal conviction and responsibility. “We speak solely for ourselves and not on behalf of the entire House. We were part of the notice of allegation of gross misconduct because the governor and deputy governor did, in fact, violate provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended. “However, we have received overwhelming appeals from leaders and citizens urging us to pursue a political solution. We are open to dialogue — not as a display of weakness — but as an act of responsibility, maturity, and forgiveness,” the lawmakers said. The legislators further urged Governor Fubara and his deputy to offer clear assurances of compliance with constitutional requirements and to honour previous agreements reached under the supervision of President Bola Tinubu. They emphasized that such commitments would be essential to rebuilding public confidence and restoring political stability in the state. This shift has exposed a growing division within the Assembly, particularly among lawmakers previously aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The emerging pro-dialogue bloc reflects a gradual move away from hardline impeachment efforts toward negotiated settlement. In response to the rising political tension, the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has also stepped in to mediate. The council has constituted a nine-member mediation committee tasked with engaging all relevant stakeholders and proposing sustainable solutions to the crisis. The committee is chaired by His Majesty, Dr. Suanu T. Y. Baridam, with Eze Barrister Nwachukwu Nnam Obi serving as Co-Chairman. Other members include His Majesty Eze Uchechukwu Isaiah-Elikwu, His Majesty Eze Leslie Eke, His Majesty Dr. Samuel Amaechi, His Majesty Dr. Felix Otuwarikpo, His Majesty Eze Barrister Onyekachi Amaonwu, HRH King Agolia Aboko, and HRH Eze Nwankwo Nwankwo. Barrister Darlington Owiriwa serves as the committee’s secretary. In a statement signed by HRM Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, Eze Oha Apara IV of Apara Kingdom and Chairman of the Council, the traditional rulers urged residents, political actors, supporters of all factions, and social media users to exercise restraint. They warned against inflammatory statements or actions capable of escalating tensions, stressing the need for peace and unity in Rivers State.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening security around schools across Nigeria in order to guarantee a safe, stable, and supportive learning environment for students. The minister made this assurance on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving an award from the National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN). The award recognised his contributions to protecting educational institutions and promoting the Safe Schools Initiative, a programme designed to address security threats affecting schools. Speaking at the event, Musa emphasised that meaningful education cannot take place in an atmosphere of fear or insecurity. He noted that the government would continue working closely with parents, teachers, school authorities, and other relevant stakeholders to safeguard students and educational facilities nationwide. According to him, security remains a fundamental requirement for effective teaching and learning, stressing that without safety, academic progress becomes almost impossible. “Without security, there will not be a good learning environment. We will continue to work seriously to ensure that our schools are safe. Let us continue to work hand-in-hand—parents, teachers, government, and society—to ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their fullest potential,” the minister stated. Musa further explained that the recognition from NAPTAN had strengthened his determination to pursue policies and initiatives that enhance education quality across the country. He highlighted the importance of providing a secure, inclusive environment for students, equipping teachers with proper resources and training, and encouraging stronger collaboration between schools, families, and local communities. He described parents and teachers as vital partners in national development, noting that discipline and quality education are essential to raising responsible citizens and preventing future social instability. Earlier, the President of NAPTAN, Haruna Danjuma, said the minister’s appointment reflected his long-standing dedication to national security. He particularly praised Musa’s role in initiating the Safe Schools Programme during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff. Danjuma explained that the programme had restored confidence among parents and helped improve school attendance, especially in areas affected by insecurity. He noted that fears of kidnappings, attacks, and other criminal activities had previously discouraged many families from sending their children to school. According to the association, parents across different parts of the country have benefited from improved security measures around vulnerable schools. The award, he said, was presented to encourage the minister to sustain and expand these protective efforts. Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, commended the minister’s leadership and described the award as a clear recognition of his commitment to protecting both Nigeria’s national security and the future of its children. Pheelangwa added that the ministry would continue collaborating with education stakeholders to ensure that security and education advance together. Concerns over school safety have intensified in recent years due to repeated attacks and kidnappings involving students and teachers by bandits and other criminal groups in some regions of the country. These incidents have disrupted academic activities, forced school closures, and heightened anxiety among parents, educators, and policymakers.
