The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has firmly criticized President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, warning him to desist from meddling in the affairs of Turkish organizations legally operating in Nigeria. The Islamic human rights group condemned Erdogan’s unfounded accusations and called on him to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.

This rebuttal followed the recent caution issued by the Turkish government to Nigeria, advising Nigerian authorities to be vigilant over the alleged presence of Gulenist terrorist networks within the country.

MURIC Defends Turkish Entities in Nigeria

According to Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC, the Turkish groups active in Nigeria are predominantly focused on education and charitable initiatives. These organizations collaborate closely with Nigerians, contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s educational development and social progress.

In a press statement released on Monday, Professor Akintola expressed deep reservations about Turkey’s warning. He stated:

“The Turkish government has urged Nigeria to beware of alleged Gulenist terrorists supposedly operating within our borders. We view this caution with considerable skepticism. President Erdogan is merely seeing imaginary threats where none exist. He is essentially haunted by his own fears.

Professor Akintola stressed that:

“Nigeria is a sovereign democratic nation, not a Turkish colony or satellite. Erdogan has no authority to dictate Nigeria’s internal decisions or policies to further his personal or political agenda. It is common knowledge globally that Erdogan has crushed virtually all opposition within Turkey through authoritarian and repressive governance.”

Nigeria Rejects Erdogan’s Political Manipulation

MURIC highlighted that the Nigerian government has already dismissed Turkey’s unsubstantiated allegations. Nigeria remains committed to democratic values and refuses to become complicit in any foreign power’s efforts to suppress dissent or political opposition in their homeland.

Akintola further stated:

“We urge the Turkish President to cease his relentless pursuit of the followers of the late Shaykh Gulen residing in Nigeria. His baseless claims amount to nothing but sensationalism. Nigeria cannot be deceived or dragged into Turkey’s internal political conflicts.”

“Erdogan should save his cock and bull stories for the marines. Nigeria is not a pawn in anyone’s geopolitical chessboard. We stand firm and will not tolerate any attempt to exploit or manipulate our nation.”

The Larger Implication of Turkey’s Stance

This development underscores a broader concern about foreign political influence in Africa, especially where international organizations operate under bilateral cooperation. Nigeria’s resistance to external political coercion reaffirms its sovereignty and the independence of its civil society space.
