Relations between the United States and China once again moved into global focus as Xi Jinping warned Donald Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push both nations toward serious confrontation during high-level bilateral talks in Beijing.
The warning came as the summit between the two world powers officially began in the Chinese capital, where leaders from both countries gathered to discuss major international concerns including trade relations, Taiwan, the Iran conflict, Ukraine, and regional security issues surrounding the Korean Peninsula.
According to Chinese state media, Xi made the remarks during a private meeting with Trump while emphasizing that the future stability of China-US relations depends heavily on how the Taiwan matter is managed.
Xi reportedly stated that Taiwan remains the most sensitive issue in relations between Beijing and Washington. He warned that poor handling of the matter could result in tensions escalating into direct clashes or even broader conflict between the two nations.
China continues to view Taiwan as part of its territory under the “One China” principle, despite the island operating with its own democratic government. While the United States officially recognizes Beijing diplomatically, American law also requires Washington to support Taiwan’s defense capabilities through arms sales and military assistance.

According to Xi, a stable relationship between Beijing and Washington benefits the entire world, while confrontation between the two countries could create negative consequences globally.
Grand Ceremony Marks Trump’s Arrival in Beijing
Trump received a formal state welcome in Beijing as Xi greeted him on the red carpet outside the Great Hall of the People.
The event featured a large ceremonial reception that included:

- National anthems from both countries
- Cannon salutes
- Children waving Chinese and American flags
- Traditional diplomatic greetings
Chinese military bands performed while both leaders inspected the ceremonial guard line before entering the hall for official discussions.
Xi also welcomed several senior US officials attending the summit, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The high-profile visit marks the first trip to Beijing by a US president since Trump’s earlier visit to China in 2017.
Trade and Economic Issues Dominate the Agenda
Trade remains one of the most critical issues during the summit as both countries continue to recover from years of economic friction and tariff disputes.
Trump stated before the meeting that trade discussions would be among his top priorities during conversations with Xi.
The US president reportedly hopes to secure agreements that would increase Chinese purchases of American agricultural goods and aircraft.

Trump indicated that he intended to hold lengthy discussions with Xi regarding Tehran, particularly because China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil despite US sanctions.
The American president is reportedly seeking Beijing’s assistance in encouraging Iran to negotiate with Washington.
Meanwhile, Xi is expected to challenge Washington over continued US arms sales to Taiwan.
In December, the United States announced military equipment sales to Taiwan valued at more than $10 billion, although some deliveries have yet to move forward.
Beijing has repeatedly criticized such military support, arguing that foreign arms sales interfere with China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan.
Cultural Diplomacy Included in State Visit
Aside from political and economic meetings, Trump’s visit also includes cultural activities organized by the Chinese government.
The itinerary reportedly features a tour of the historic Temple of Heaven, a UNESCO World Heritage Site traditionally associated with imperial ceremonies and prayers for good harvests during ancient Chinese dynasties.
A formal state banquet is also expected to take place later in the evening at the Great Hall of the People.
Trump is scheduled to depart Beijing on Friday following one final private meeting with Xi.
