Why Atiku Abubakar Resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has officially withdrawn his membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), attributing his decision to unresolved conflicts within the party and a clear deviation from the principles upon which the PDP was originally founded.

In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku declared his immediate exit from the party.

“This letter serves as my formal resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) effective immediately,” Atiku stated.

Having held the office of Nigeria’s Vice President between 1999 and 2007, Atiku expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the PDP for the significant roles he played under its banner, including his two presidential bids.

“Being Nigeria’s Vice President for two terms and contesting as a presidential candidate on two occasions under the PDP platform remains a pivotal part of my personal and political journey,” he wrote. “As a founding member of this respected party, making this decision weighs heavily on me.”

Atiku emphasized that his resignation was necessitated by the PDP’s ongoing shift away from its original ideals and principles.

“The party’s current path no longer aligns with the foundational beliefs we once shared, prompting my decision to sever ties,” he noted.

“It is with deep regret that I tender my resignation, having acknowledged the insurmountable differences that now exist.”

Despite his departure, Atiku extended his goodwill to the PDP and its leadership, wishing them success in their future pursuits while expressing gratitude for the years of support and collaboration.

“I sincerely wish the party and its leadership prosperity moving forward. Thank you for the support and opportunities afforded to me over the years,” he concluded.

The resignation letter was formally acknowledged and received by Hammardama Abubakar on July 14, 2025, marking the end of Atiku’s long-standing association with the party.
