Trump Envoy Proposes Italy as Replacement for Iran at World Cup – Report

A diplomatic proposal tied to Donald Trump has stirred global football discussions after a senior envoy reportedly suggested that Italy should take the place of Iran at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

According to a report published by the Financial Times, U.S. envoy Paolo Zampolli revealed that he had encouraged both President Trump and Gianni Infantino to consider allowing Italy into the tournament lineup. The competition is scheduled to be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Zampolli described the idea as aspirational, emphasizing his personal connection to Italy and admiration for the national team. He noted that Italy, known as the Azzurri, holds four World Cup titles, a legacy he believes strengthens their case for inclusion despite failing to qualify through the official process.

The suggestion reportedly comes at a time of strained relations between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Tensions escalated after Meloni criticized Trump’s remarks concerning Pope Leo XIV in the context of the Iran conflict. The envoy’s proposal is said to be part of a broader attempt to ease diplomatic friction between both leaders.

Italy’s absence from the World Cup has been notable, as the team recently missed qualification for the third consecutive time. Their latest setback came after a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina during the playoff stage, ending their hopes of securing a spot through competition.

Meanwhile, Iran’s participation remains uncertain due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. The conflict involving the United States and Israel, which began on February 28, has raised concerns about logistics and security surrounding Iran’s involvement in the tournament.

Earlier, the Iranian football governing body, FFIRI, indicated that discussions were underway with FIFA regarding the possibility of relocating Iran’s matches from the United States to Mexico. This move was being considered as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing crisis.

Despite these developments, FIFA leadership has maintained a consistent stance. Infantino previously stated that Iran would participate in the tournament as originally planned and would compete according to the official draw arrangements. His comments came during a visit to a friendly match involving Iran and Costa Rica in Turkey.

Zampolli, who has a background as a businessman and former modeling agent, is also known for his longstanding association with Trump. He has publicly claimed to have introduced Trump to his wife, Melania Trump.
