A recent report alleging that President Bola Tinubu ordered the reinstatement of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly has been dismissed as false information. Lawmakers have condemned the claim, emphasizing that it is a ploy to distract the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.
Fact-Checking the Alleged Presidential Directive
An online report that went viral on Sunday suggested that President Tinubu pressured Lagos lawmakers to reinstate Obasa three weeks after his removal. According to the claims, Tinubu argued that the political consequences of Obasa’s ousting could outweigh any punitive measures taken against him for corruption and abuse of office.
A supposed senior Lagos politician was quoted as saying:
“The president has sent instructions for us to start preparing for Obasa’s return. He will only serve a short time before stepping down on his terms.”
However, this claim has been met with strong opposition from lawmakers who insist that Obasa’s return would be problematic for those involved in his removal.
Lawmakers Stand Firm Against Obasa’s Return
Since his removal on January 13, Obasa has allegedly been making several attempts to regain his position. His ousting was backed by 32 out of 40 Assembly members, citing reasons such as misconduct, financial misappropriation, and breach of public trust.
A lawmaker, speaking anonymously, rejected the report, stating:
“This is nothing but fake news. The newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has met with President Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and past Assembly members from the 1st to the 9th Assembly. Numerous courtesy visits and endorsements have further validated her election.”
The spread of this misinformation has raised concerns among political analysts and citizens, with many questioning whether Obasa is being protected by higher powers or if these reports are mere attempts to salvage his lost political standing.
Meranda’s Focus on Leadership
Despite the controversy, Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda remains undeterred. An aide close to Meranda, who requested anonymity, stated:
“The Speaker is focused on her responsibilities and will not be distracted by baseless speculations meant to stir confusion.”
Conclusion
Lagos lawmakers have reaffirmed their support for the leadership of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, dismissing claims of Obasa’s reinstatement as unfounded. As the Assembly moves forward under new leadership, political observers remain watchful of any further developments.
