ABUJA – President Bola Tinubu has reiterated that his decision to remove the fuel subsidy is aimed at safeguarding the future of Nigeria’s younger generations. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that his administration is committed to empowering the youth and securing a prosperous future for all Nigerians. On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate urged swift measures to tackle the growing drug abuse problem, especially among the country’s youth. During a one-day national event aimed at encouraging parental involvement in combating drug use and irresponsible behavior, senators warned that failure to act could have significant social and economic impacts on Nigeria’s young generation. Deputy Senate Leader Senator Lola Ashiru, representing Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stressed the urgent need for action. The event, organized by the Joint Committee on Drugs and Narcotics in partnership with the National Association of Nigerian Drug Monitoring (NANDRUM), called for a united effort to curb drug abuse. Senator Ashiru highlighted the link between drug abuse and rising crime, as well as its effects on access to quality education, emphasizing that the solution starts at home, with parents playing a crucial role. “Combating drug abuse is a fight for our future. As parents, we lead this effort, providing guidance and creating environments where positive choices are encouraged. Open discussions about the dangers of drugs are essential,” he stated. Event convener Ambassador Cristabel Okoye also underscored the role of parents in guiding children from an early age. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed plans to gradually phase out tricycle operations in certain areas of Abuja’s city center. He made this announcement during the launch of the FCT Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Programme on Thursday. Wike emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to enhancing the lives of young people in the FCT through this initiative. He clarified, “I’m not saying there will be no more Keke. Certain areas will still have them. We will first trial this in Maitama, Guzape, and Asokoro to assess its effectiveness.” He also raised concerns about some tricycle and taxi operators acting as informants for criminals and announced plans for security profiling of commercial bus and taxi drivers. He stated that from January, all drivers must have security approval and adhere to the designated Abuja taxi color scheme. Wike further mentioned that starting in January, no taxi or bus driver would be permitted to operate without meeting these security requirements.
