The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has taken a monumental step toward fostering inclusivity and unity by appointing five new Imams to the Abuja National Mosque. This move underscores the Council’s commitment to regional diversity and equitable representation within Nigeria’s Muslim community. Significantly, two of the appointees hail from the Southeast, reflecting the Council’s merit-based approach to leadership and its goal of bridging cultural divides. The appointments were announced at a press conference on Tuesday at the NSCIA Boardroom, National Mosque Complex, Abuja. Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Secretary-General of the NSCIA, highlighted the rigorous selection process, which involved endorsements from the General Purpose Committee (GPC), the Expanded General Purpose Committee (EGPC), and clearance by the National Fatwa Committee. The new Imams are: Oloyede praised the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for his visionary leadership, which has been instrumental in unifying the Muslim Ummah across Nigeria’s ethnic and regional lines. The inclusion of Imams from diverse regions, particularly the Southeast, is a significant milestone. As Oloyede explained, “We aim to select the best individuals from every part of the country. These appointments show that unity is achievable when merit is the priority.” Embracing Cultural Diversity within Islam The new appointees also addressed the intersection of culture and religion, stressing the need for Muslims to prioritize Islamic teachings while preserving positive cultural values. Prof. Ilyasu Usman, one of the newly appointed Imams, noted, “Every tribe has good and bad practices. Islam encourages us to embrace the good and reject what contradicts our faith.” The NSCIA reiterated that Islam serves as a unifying force that transcends tribal, ethnic, and cultural differences. This initiative is part of the Council’s ongoing strategy to strengthen the National Mosque as a center for worship, education, and Islamic scholarship. Since its establishment in 1984, the Abuja National Mosque has been a beacon of spiritual and social cohesion. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has officially presented the Staff of Office and Instrument of Appointment to Oba Abdurasak Akanni Musa, the Orijeru of Igbooye Kingdom in the Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Epe Division. Oba Musa, a distinguished professional and former urban development planner, holds a master’s degree from the University of Lagos (UNILAG). His ascension marks a new chapter for Igbooye Kingdom, where his leadership is expected to foster growth and unity. The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Kayode Robert, handed over the Staff of Office on behalf of the governor during a ceremony held at the Epe Local Government Secretariat. A Commitment to Development and Harmony In his message, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to equitable infrastructural development across Lagos State, particularly in the Epe Division. He lauded the contributions of traditional rulers, emphasizing their role in maintaining peace and driving progress within their communities. “Your selection by the Kingmakers and the acceptance by your people are a testament to your capability to lead this kingdom toward prosperity,” said the governor, represented by Commissioner Robert. He urged the new monarch to champion unity and collaboration among royal leaders within and beyond the region. Local Leaders and Community Support The Executive Chairman of Eredo LCDA, Ismail Monsuru Akinloye, represented by Vice Chairman Adesanya Lateef, also congratulated Oba Musa. He highlighted the monarch’s extensive experience, expressing confidence in his ability to propel Igbooye Kingdom and the Epe Division into an era of remarkable development. “Your Royal Majesty’s expertise will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for progress in Igbooye, Eredo LCDA, and Lagos State,” Akinloye stated. He encouraged all sons and daughters of Igbooye to rally behind their new king, emphasizing the importance of collective support in achieving peace, unity, and unprecedented progress for the historic kingdom.
