Urgent Call to Address Nigeria’s Security Crisis OWERRI — Nigerian leaders have been urged to take immediate and strategic action to curb the growing insecurity, rampant bloodshed, and the shame it continues to bring upon the country. The Bishop of the Jubilee Christian Centre Ministry Association, Rev. Udoka Ukah, made this appeal during a press briefing in Owerri ahead of his inauguration. He lamented the worsening state of security and the senseless loss of human lives, which he described as a grave concern and a tarnished reflection of Nigeria. Security on Highways: A Growing Nightmare Bishop Ukah emphasized that traveling on Nigeria’s highways has become a harrowing experience for citizens. He stressed that the country’s security crisis could be effectively tackled if all tribes and communities unite to confront the menace. “Let’s not deny the obvious: insecurity has taken over our land. Traveling on our roads is a nightmare, and human lives are being wasted senselessly. Life seems to have lost its meaning,” Ukah said. He continued: “This disturbing reality is painting a very bad picture of our country. However, we can turn the tide if all tribes come together to combat this menace. Patriots still believe in the ability of both federal and state governments to tackle this issue, but success will only come with unity and collaboration across all geopolitical zones.” Faith in Divine Intervention The cleric urged Nigerians to turn back to God in prayer, seeking His mercy and intervention. He expressed optimism that the country’s challenges would end in praise if its citizens retreat from negative practices and embrace collective action for peace. Archbishop Egbujor’s Perspective: The Economic Fallout of Insecurity During the homily, Archbishop Benjamin Egbujor also appealed to the government to intensify its efforts against insecurity. He pointed out the devastating economic impact of the crisis: “Insecurity has tarnished Nigeria’s image, scared away investors, and forced many talented individuals to leave the country,” Egbujor stated. He revealed his own reluctance to stay in Nigeria due to the rampant insecurity, citing reports of attacks by unknown gunmen. “It’s heartbreaking that businesses are folding up, and our best minds are fleeing the country. This is not the Nigeria we dreamed of. The government must find a permanent solution to this ugly situation to ensure people can safely return to their homes,” he added. A Plea for Action Both Bishop Ukah and Archbishop Egbujor highlighted the importance of unified efforts among leaders, citizens, and all tribes in Nigeria to address the security challenges plaguing the nation. Former Vice President and 2023 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated Senator John Azuta-Mbata on his election as the new President-General of the Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. Azuta-Mbata, a former Senator representing Rivers East from 1999 to 2007 under the PDP, emerged as the 13th President-General of the organisation in an election held in Enugu on Friday. He succeeds Fidelis Chukwu, whose tenure concluded the same day. Azuta-Mbata, originally from the Ikwerre ethnic group in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria, will lead the group alongside other newly elected executives. Okey Nwadinobi from Abia State was elected as the National Deputy President, while former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Emeka Sibeidu, will serve as the new Secretary-General. Fourteen additional executives were also elected during the process.
