Former South African international, Shaun Bartlett, has blamed Galatasaray’s heavy 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg encounter on the early injury suffered by Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen during the match. According to Bartlett, the Turkish side struggled throughout the game, especially in their attacking build-up, after Osimhen picked up an injury in the early minutes of the encounter. Liverpool secured qualification to the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Champions League after defeating Galatasaray 4-0 at their home ground, Anfield. The English club found the back of the net through goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitiké, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah, sealing a comfortable victory in front of their home supporters. Galatasaray’s performance was significantly affected after their key forward, Osimhen, was forced to continue the match with discomfort following an early collision. Just eleven minutes after kickoff, the former African Footballer of the Year landed awkwardly while contesting for a header and fell on his right wrist after hitting the turf. He briefly received medical attention and returned to the pitch with his arm strapped following a challenge involving Liverpool midfielder Szoboszlai. However, it became clear that the injury limited his movement and reduced his effectiveness, leading to his substitution at halftime. Speaking during analysis on SuperSport, Bartlett explained that Galatasaray found it difficult to maintain attacking pressure after losing the full impact of their main striker early in the match. He stated that it was rare to see one side dominate attacking play so strongly, adding that the absence of a fully fit Osimhen made it harder for Galatasaray to respond effectively. Bartlett also noted that Osimhen remains one of the most influential players in the squad, and his reduced involvement prevented the Turkish club from building momentum in forward positions, while Liverpool deserved credit for their overall performance. He further pointed out that Liverpool have not always had good results against Galatasaray in past meetings, making the victory even more significant. Despite the defeat, Osimhen finished his Champions League campaign with an impressive record of seven goals and three assists in ten appearances.
