Journalist Released After DSS Invitation A correspondent for Vanguard, Haruna Aliyu, has been released unharmed following an invitation by the Kebbi State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS). Aliyu had earlier raised concerns over his safety upon receiving the summons, fearing possible threats. However, after honoring the invitation, he confirmed that he was treated professionally and given the opportunity to explain his knowledge regarding a dispute involving his colleague and DSS personnel. Aliyu’s visit to the DSS Kebbi Command strengthened the relationship between media professionals and the security agency, which is known for its thorough investigations aimed at ensuring justice regardless of social status. He expressed his gratitude to Vanguard Newspaper, the Kebbi Area Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the Correspondent Chapel for their support. DSS Witness Testifies Against NSCDC Officers in Kidnapping & Banditry Case Meanwhile, at the Federal High Court in Ibadan, a DSS official, Mr. Stephen Okolo, testified against three officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and an alleged arms dealer, all accused of involvement in kidnapping and banditry. The NSCDC officials—Olamide Okesola, Adedeji Adewale, and Asmau Omar—along with an alleged illegal arms dealer, Emmanuel Olatunji, are facing multiple charges, including conspiracy, terrorism, and illegal arms supply. How Technology Aided the Arrest During his testimony before Justice N.E. Maha, Okolo explained that the DSS deployed advanced surveillance technology to track down and apprehend the suspects. The operation, initiated in January 2023, was in response to the rising cases of kidnapping and banditry in Oyo State’s Okeogun region and parts of Kwara State. Through sustained monitoring, the DSS identified and arrested key figures in the criminal network. Among them were two notorious bandit leaders, Baguda and Banshile, who were known for their violent activities. Okolo also presented crucial evidence to the court, including a bag containing 1,000 rounds of live ammunition, reportedly seized from Lawan Buhari, another suspect linked to the case. He emphasized that breaking the chain of ammunition supply significantly reduced the rate of criminal activities in the affected areas. Arms Supplier Confesses to DSS Investigators The second prosecution witness (PW2), Lawan Buhari, admitted to selling AK-47 rifles and bullets to the defendants, who allegedly funneled the weapons to terrorist groups. Buhari, who was formerly with Operation Burst—a security task force—revealed that the accused NSCDC officers had approached him for arms supply. Before his arrest, Buhari claimed he had received substantial financial payments for his role in arming criminal elements. He was eventually detained at the 81 Battalion Barracks in Mokola, Ibadan. Charges & Next Court Hearing According to DSS prosecution counsel T.A. Nurudeen, the defendants are facing a 15-count amended charge, including terrorism, illegal arms dealing, and aiding and abetting terrorism. However, all four defendants pleaded not guilty. Justice Maha has scheduled the continuation of the trial for February 11, 2025. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that six soldiers lost their lives during an attack by ISWAP (Islamic State’s West Africa Province) and Boko Haram militants on a military base in Borno State. In a statement issued yesterday, DHQ reported that 34 terrorists were neutralized in the confrontation, with 23 AK-47 rifles and over 200 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition recovered. The incident occurred on January 4, 2025, when a group of ISWAP/Boko Haram militants on motorcycles and gun trucks launched a surprise assault on troops stationed in Sabon Gari village, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. The attack was reportedly a retaliation for the recent killing of one of their commanders and several combatants. However, the military foiled the ambush as patrol troops returning to base countered the assault swiftly. A reinforcement team, including elements from the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), vigilantes, and hybrid forces, responded promptly, overwhelming the insurgents. During the operation, the reinforcement team encountered an improvised explosive device (IED), injuring the Vigilante Commander. Despite this, they managed to overpower the remaining terrorists. The air component of Operation HADIN KAI further targeted the fleeing militants, killing several and aiding in the successful recovery of weapons. While 34 terrorists were neutralized, six military personnel were tragically killed. DHQ noted that the names of the fallen soldiers are being withheld until their next of kin are officially informed, urging the media to respect the process. The military reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring national security, emphasizing its resolve to end insurgency in Nigeria. Renowned terrorist and bandit leader, Bello Turji, is reportedly in hiding, moving between concealed locations, after the Nigerian Army successfully neutralized many of his fighters in Zamfara State. This was disclosed by Lt. Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, spokesperson for Operation FansanYamma, a special military task force targeting terrorism in Northwest Nigeria. In a recent interview, Abdullahi confirmed that Turji’s terror camps in the Shinkafi Local Government Area were decimated through coordinated airstrikes and ground assaults conducted by the military task force. He assured that the remaining bandits would soon be captured. “Our airstrikes have severely damaged terrorist strongholds in Shinkafi. Several of Turji’s fighters have been neutralized, forcing him into hiding, living in holes like a rat,” Abdullahi stated. The crackdown follows threats by Turji to attack residents of Shinkafi unless his relatives, previously arrested on terrorism charges, were released. In retaliation, Turji reportedly carried out attacks and abducted travelers in the area, prompting a swift military response. The operation led to the deaths of several terrorists, including another notorious bandit leader, Sani Rusu. Boko Haram Expands in Niger State: Explosive Attacks Kill Three, Injure Four Between February and December 2024, Boko Haram insurgents intensified their activities in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, with six Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks reported during this period. The attacks have not only led to the death of several locals but also forced the military to withdraw from critical areas, including Allawa garrison town. Recent reports indicate that the insurgents are now camping in the Maganda and Kugu regions within the Allawa forest reserve, an area that connects terror-prone reserves in Kaduna and Zamfara States. Recent Explosions in December In less than a month, four IED explosions have been recorded in the Bassa and Allawa axes. The most devastating occurred on a Thursday morning when three siblings—Mali, Nehemiah, and Jona—were headed to their farm. Tragically, they triggered an explosive planted by terrorists, leading to severe injuries. One of the siblings, a minor, had his leg amputated, while the others were injured and rushed to the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna. Later that same day, another explosive detonated on the Bassa-Gwadara road, killing a bread seller on a motorcycle and injuring a rescuer. A youth leader, Yusuf Shapa, confirmed yet another explosion at 4 p.m. on Tudun Baturiya-Erena road, marking three attacks within a single day. Previous Attacks and Military Withdrawal Earlier incidents include the December 7 IED explosion on the Bassa-Unguwar Usman road, which killed a local, and the February 3 attack along the Allawa-Pandogari road, which led to the death of travelers. The terrorists’ repeated use of IEDs has forced the military to retreat from Allawa, leaving civilians vulnerable and causing mass displacement to nearby Erena. Boko Haram’s Growing Presence Boko Haram has established a stronghold in the Allawa forest reserve, enabling them to launch attacks on civilians and security personnel. The forest links key villages like Bassa, Kukkoki, and Gyramiya, which have become hotspots for insurgent activities. This alarming expansion follows earlier warnings by former Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who revealed in 2021 that Boko Haram had hoisted its flag in Kaure village. Despite these warnings, effective countermeasures to curb the spread of insurgency remain elusive. At the time of writing, the Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, Abdullahi Garba, has not responded to inquiries regarding the government’s plans to address this growing threat. The Federal Government of Nigeria has pledged to uphold justice for victims of terrorism, emphasizing its dedication to addressing their rights and needs. The assurance came during the launch of the Model Legal Provisions for Victims of Terrorism at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja on Wednesday. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, represented by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Abubakar Babadoko, highlighted the importance of this initiative in mitigating the lasting impacts of terrorism. Addressing the Aftermath of Terrorism Mr. Fagbemi stressed that terrorism has inflicted severe consequences, not only claiming lives but also leaving emotional and physical scars on individuals, families, and communities. He reiterated that while combatting terrorism remains a priority, providing support to victims is equally essential. He stated: “The scourge of terrorism has cast a long shadow over our nation, leaving a trail of suffering, loss, and trauma. It is imperative that we not only fight terrorism but also offer comprehensive support to its victims. As Attorney General, I am committed to ensuring justice for these individuals and upholding their rights.” Legislative Measures for Victim Support The Federal Government has made significant progress in counterterrorism efforts, particularly through the enactment of the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act 2022. This legislation includes provisions to establish the Victim Support Trust Fund under Section 91, aimed at offering financial assistance and rehabilitation services to victims. Section 92 of the Act further details the creation of a Trust Fund Committee to manage these resources effectively. Fagbemi assured attendees that his office would oversee the proper implementation of these provisions to ensure victims receive the support needed to rebuild their lives. Launch of the Model Legal Provisions (MLP) The event also marked the launch of a technical assistance project to implement Model Legal Provisions for Victims of Terrorism. This initiative is designed to enhance the capacity of Nigeria’s legal and judicial systems to provide justice, support, and rehabilitation for victims. “This project will play a pivotal role in ensuring victims receive the necessary support, compensation, and rehabilitation to overcome the challenges they face,” Fagbemi added. Acknowledging the Human Impact of Terrorism National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) Coordinator, Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, highlighted the devastating effects of terrorism on women, children, and youths since 2009. He noted that children had been forcibly recruited, young girls exploited in suicide missions, and families torn apart. Laka said: “The ripple effects of these tragic events include population displacement, disrupted education, and fractured social cohesion. Today’s launch of the MLP Project represents a major step forward in supporting victims and rebuilding affected communities.” Building Nigeria’s Counterterrorism Capacity The MLP Project aims to enhance Nigeria’s ability to prevent, investigate, and prosecute terrorism-related crimes while ensuring comprehensive support for survivors.
