Edo Governor Okpebholo Freezes All State-Owned Bank Accounts: Here’s Why

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has taken a significant financial step by ordering the immediate freezing of all state-owned bank accounts held in commercial banks. This directive is to remain in effect until further notice. The announcement was made through a statement by Fred Itua, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, which emphasized the need for immediate compliance from commercial banks and the leadership of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).Governor Okpebholo underscored that non-compliance by any MDA or civil servant would result in strict penalties, showcasing his commitment to enforcing this directive. He specified that, under the new order, no funds are to be withdrawn from these accounts until further notice is provided. In a related move, Governor Okpebholo has changed the designation of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges back to its original title, the Ministry of Works. He criticized the previous administration for not delivering on road or bridge construction projects, arguing that maintaining the ministry’s name was unjustified given the absence of tangible infrastructure achievements. The Governor directed relevant agencies to implement the name change swiftly and signaled that more reviews of past administration policies and decisions are underway. He indicated that further measures would be taken to support Edo State’s progress and ensure more effective governance. READ ALSO: GeneralNJC Suspends Two Nigerian Judges Over Misconduct
