A tragic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed the life of a yet-to-be-identified motorcyclist after his yellow Quic motorcycle caught fire following a collision. The incident occurred on Thursday night, March 20, 2025, in front of the NNPC Filling Station, Ibafo, Ogun State. According to the Ogun State Police Command, the crash happened at approximately 9:30 p.m. The state police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, disclosed in a statement that the motorcyclist was reportedly speeding when he lost control and crashed into a culvert near the petrol station. The impact caused the motorcycle to burst into flames, resulting in the instant death of the rider. The official statement reads: “The Divisional Police Officer of Ibafo reported a fatal motorcycle accident that took place on March 20, 2025, around 9:30 p.m. in front of the NNPC Filling Station, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The accident involved a yellow Quic motorcycle with an unknown registration number, leading to the unfortunate death of the rider, whose identity remains undisclosed.” Emergency responders, including officers from the Motor Traffic Police (MOTOPOL) unit, quickly arrived at the scene to assess the situation. The deceased’s body was taken to Real Divine Hospital Mortuary, Ibafo, for proper handling. Additionally, the burnt motorcycle was transported to the police station for safekeeping and further examination by the Vehicle Inspection Office. Over the years, I’ve abandoned the idea of making New Year’s resolutions. Instead, my sole exception is setting the tone for the year with the help of the Almighty, through fasting and prayer. These rituals may not be easy or enjoyable, but they bring surprising health benefits and serve as a reminder of God’s presence in my life. I don’t take this lightly, even if the process leaves me looking like someone who’s just come from a war-torn zone! As I reflect on 2024, I can’t help but express my gratitude to God for His continuous guidance. I also salute the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for their tireless work, even as some drivers continue to ignore regulations—though they still manage to thank the Corps for keeping them in check despite their violations. 2024 marked a significant milestone for me, as it was the year I bade farewell to a 28-year career in the Federal Road Safety Corps. Through this journey, I had the honor of contributing to initiatives like “Oga Driver” and “Celebrity Special Marshal,” platforms that allowed me to make an imprint in the hearts of many. My path has been truly blessed, and I am hopeful that 2025 will bring even greater promises. Though I’ve left the Corps, my commitment to saving lives and promoting road safety remains unchanged. I am confident that the Corps, under the leadership of my friend and mentor, Shehu Mohammed, will continue to deliver effective policing and timely responses to accidents. One pressing concern for me this year is the alarming number of accidents caused by petrol-laden tankers. As part of my 2025 agenda, I’m calling for a renewed focus on preventing such crashes that devastate families and communities. You may have already seen my articles shedding light on the importance of using the right terminology when referring to road incidents. For instance, my recent piece, “Was That Mass Fatality Another Crash?” examined the tragic tanker accident in Niger State. Similarly, I wrote about a deadly crash in Enugu State that claimed the lives of 15 people, including an entire family. I’ve also been addressing the misconception that crashes are “accidents.” A true accident is an unforeseeable event, whereas a crash is preventable. In “Was That Fatal Crash an Accident?” I analyzed the incident in Benue State, where nine family members tragically lost their lives due to preventable circumstances. One of the core issues I continue to emphasize is speeding. In “Check Your Speed in 2025,” I explored the dangers of excessive speed. Speed not only increases the likelihood of a crash, but also exacerbates the consequences. The faster you go, the less time you have to react. For example, a car traveling at 50 km/h requires 13 meters to come to a stop, but a car going at 40 km/h only needs 8.5 meters. The risks are even more severe when speed limits are ignored. Going just 5 km/h over the speed limit increases the risk of a crash significantly, and at higher speeds, the chances of fatality increase dramatically. This is why countries worldwide, including Nigeria, set speed limits. Limiting vehicle speed helps reduce crashes and minimizes the severity of injuries. In Nigeria, speed limits are clearly defined: on expressways, private cars can go up to 100 km/h, while taxis and buses are capped at 90 km/h. In built-up areas like residential and commercial zones, the speed limit is reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h, reflecting the need for heightened caution in these areas. As we move forward into 2025, I urge you to embrace the call for safer roads, consider the impact of speed on crash outcomes, and contribute to making our streets safer for everyone. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) recently impounded 173 vehicles for violating traffic regulations, specifically for illegal parking and causing road obstructions. The vehicles seized included 125 commercial buses and 48 private cars, and the operation took place in some of Lagos’ busiest and most congested areas, such as Idumota, Ijaye Street, Martins, Ereko, Nnamdi Azikiwe by Tom Jones, Ebute-Ero, Oyingbo, Ijora, Adeniji Adele, and Iddo. In a statement released on Thursday via LASTMA’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the agency emphasized its commitment to upholding traffic discipline and ensuring smooth vehicle movement across the city. Focused Crackdown on Traffic Offenders This operation is part of LASTMA’s ongoing effort to ease Lagos’ notorious traffic congestion, particularly in areas where illegal parking and unauthorized garages worsen gridlocks. The crackdown targets not only illegal parking but also unsafe driving behaviors such as driving against traffic and reckless maneuvers. Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA General Manager, alongside Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, led the initiative. The operation is part of a broader campaign to address dangerous driving habits and enforce traffic discipline across the state. Other Traffic Violations Leading to Impoundment In addition to illegal parking and road obstructions, LASTMA enforces the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, which lists over 20 offenses that can result in vehicle impoundment. Repeat offenders face higher fines or additional penalties. This crackdown serves as a reminder of the importance of obeying traffic rules for the safety and convenience of all road users in Lagos. A tragic road accident involving a pilot vehicle from Governor Hyacinth Alia’s convoy in Benue State has claimed one life and left another person injured. The incident occurred in the ancient town of Ihugh, located in Vandeikya Local Government Area (LGA). According to reports, the Governor, a native of Vandeikya LGA, was traveling home for Christmas celebrations. The accident happened as his convoy was en route to an event in his hometown. One of the vehicles in the convoy reportedly veered off the road due to poor visibility caused by excessive dust, colliding with a motorcycle. An eyewitness explained that the dusty condition of the road, worsened by multiple vehicles traveling simultaneously, likely caused the driver to lose control. “The driver hit a motorbike rider, leading to the death of one passenger and injuries to another,” the source stated. Chief Solomon Iorpev, the Governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communication, confirmed that the ill-fated vehicle was part of the Governor’s fleet but clarified that it was not traveling with the main convoy at the time of the crash. He attributed the accident to poor visibility caused by dust and an attempt to avoid an oncoming vehicle. “The vehicle was alone on an assignment when it was involved in the accident. The dusty road, coupled with an oncoming vehicle, caused the driver to swerve and hit the motorcycle,” Chief Iorpev explained. Meanwhile, Superintendent Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for Benue State, stated that the Command had not yet received an official report on the incident. Tragic Third Mainland Bridge accident claims one life and injures four others. Learn how rescue efforts and safety measures can prevent similar incidents. A tragic accident involving a J5 Ford bus and a Mercedes truck occurred at Ilubirin, heading toward Sura, on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge early Monday morning. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the crash resulted in one fatality and left four others injured. Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, shared details in a statement on X.com (formerly Twitter), revealing that rescue efforts were led by General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki. The statement read:“This morning, a serious collision involving a J5 Ford bus (FKJ 724 YC) and a Mercedes truck (FKJ 746 YC) occurred at Ilubirin, inward Sura, on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge. The incident claimed one life and left a total of five individuals affected.” LASTMA officials, supported by bystanders, swiftly began rescue operations. Four victims were extricated from the vehicles, three of whom survived. Sadly, one individual trapped in the J5 Ford bus, which was loaded with pepper and other perishable goods, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The survivors were rushed to Lagos Island’s General Hospital for immediate medical treatment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the J5 Ford bus suffered a brake failure while speeding, leading to a collision with the Mercedes truck. Emergency teams, including those from the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigerian Police Force, joined LASTMA in managing the aftermath. The accident caused significant traffic congestion, stretching from the site to the Unilag waterfront. However, LASTMA’s team worked quickly to clear the wreckage, remove the perishable goods, and restore normal traffic flow. LASTMA General Manager Bakare-Oki extended his condolences to the deceased’s family and stressed the importance of adhering to road safety measures, especially during the festive season. He urged drivers, particularly those handling heavy-duty vehicles, to avoid speeding and ensure their vehicles are in excellent condition before embarking on journeys. In Ibadan, two officers from the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Oyedepo Samuel and Waheed Quadri, were attacked by tricycle riders and hoodlums while on duty. The incident occurred at the Water Corporation gate in Ibadan, where the officers were struck with iron rods, stones, and sticks, causing serious injuries. Eyewitnesses reported that the officers had stopped a commercial tricycle that was blocking the road and causing traffic congestion. While they were transporting the tricycle to the Agodi Gate command unit, they were ambushed by a group of angry tricycle riders and hoodlums. A good Samaritan intervened, helping the officers escape the mob. The injured officers are currently receiving medical treatment at the State clinic in the Secretariat, Ibadan. The Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd.), confirmed that seven individuals were arrested in connection with the attack. He condemned the assault, expressing his dismay that officers who are dedicated to maintaining road safety are being targeted. Adesagba assured that the OYRTMA will continue its efforts to enforce road orderliness and will not be intimidated by such attacks. The arrested suspects are being held at the Idi-Ape police station, and they will face legal consequences for their actions. The suspects were brought before the Magistrate District Court 1, Ibadan North East, on charges of assault. Each suspect was granted bail with one surety and a bond of N100,000. The Rivers State police command has successfully dismantled a kidnapping gang notorious for setting up illegal roadblocks along the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road to abduct passengers. According to the new Police Commissioner, Mustapha Bala, the gang’s method involved stopping motorists at gunpoint, taking hostages, and demanding ransom. On October 17, 2024, two suspects were arrested by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and the gang leader was captured on October 19 in Egbeda. The suspects have confessed to their involvement in kidnapping, and their arrest was made possible through intelligence gathering. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices and recover their weapons. This operation is expected to bring relief to travelers on the busy Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, a key route connecting the South-South region to states like Imo, Anambra, and Lagos. The police believe this gang was responsible for the recent abduction of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and two others along the Elele/Omerelu axis. The police assured the public of their heightened efforts to maintain safety on the expressway, urging citizens to report suspicious activities. In addition to this success, two coordinated raids at Elechi Beach and Nanka waterfront targeted criminal hideouts, leading to the arrest of an armed robber and the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and a stolen vehicle. Other operations were also carried out in Mogho, Gokana LGA, as the police continue their crackdown on criminal gangs in the region.
