In a strategic move to improve the efficiency and global competitiveness of Nigerian ports, the Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC) has officially launched its Board of Trustees (BoT). The announcement came during the council’s quarterly meeting, held recently in Lagos. New Leadership to Drive Maritime Excellence Speaking at the inauguration, the Chairman of NPCC, Mr. Bolaji Sunmola, emphasized the critical role of the new board in deepening collaboration between the public and private sectors. He explained that the BoT would harness strategic oversight, experience, and wisdom to tackle systemic challenges plaguing Nigeria’s port infrastructure. “This council is not a lone entity. It serves as a bridge connecting port users, operators, and regulators, solving sector-wide issues through advocacy, arbitration, advisory, and consulting,” Sunmola stated. Global Partnerships for Maritime Transformation To reinforce its commitment to reform, the NPCC is initiating a strategic partnership with the London Ports Consultative Council. According to Sunmola, a delegation from NPCC will soon travel to London to engage in knowledge exchange aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s maritime sector. He described the conference’s theme, “Digital Information and Data Management for a Sustainable Marine and Blue Economy,” as a timely initiative that aligns with the global push for smart port operations. A Call for Joint Action Sunmola underscored the importance of improving port operations, citing the negative impacts of delays and inefficiencies on Nigeria’s economy. He urged all stakeholders to work together to turn Nigeria into a maritime hub within the West African sub-region. “Our seaports are central to economic growth. To achieve global competitiveness in the next five years, we must collaborate, innovate, and invest strategically,” he noted.
