Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has voiced a strong opinion about the political disposition of Igbo men, asserting that they are not inherently good politicians. According to him, the nature of Igbo individuals — particularly their intolerance for political betrayal — makes them ill-suited for the treacherous landscape of Nigerian politics. Igbo Cultural Values Clash With Political Realities, Says Edochie During a recent sit-down interview with Afia TV, the legendary actor explained that the political culture in Nigeria thrives on betrayal, alliances, and compromises — qualities that, in his view, do not align with the average Igbo man’s character. “An Igbo man is not a good politician,” Edochie stated. “And I will tell you why. People who are used to politics — or the treachery that characterises politics — can overlook a lot of things. But the Igbo man is not constituted to condone treachery a second time. If you hurt the Igbo man once in politics, he will never give you a second chance to hurt him again. He will withdraw.” He emphasized that this cultural rigidity causes many Igbo politicians to sever strategic political alliances after one instance of betrayal, leading to long-term career setbacks and limited political advancement. Political Treachery Has No Second Chance Among Igbos Edochie went further to highlight that forgiveness in politics, especially when it involves repeated betrayal, is not part of the Igbo man’s political playbook. Once loyalty is broken, the average Igbo politician cuts ties permanently — a decision that, while morally sound, often leads to political isolation in Nigeria’s fluid and sometimes murky political environment. “The Igbo man is really not constituted to sustain political treachery,” he reiterated. “The moment you exhibit betrayal in your involvement with an Igbo man, they cut you off — that’s it.” His statements reflect broader conversations about the involvement of the Igbo ethnic group in Nigerian politics, and how deep-seated cultural norms can impact political success or failure.
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has criticized Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, for his attacks on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Dogara expressed shock over Mohammed’s remarks against Wike, reminding the governor that Wike played a key role in financing his election campaign. Wike’s Role in Mohammed’s Election Victory In a detailed statement on Tuesday, Dogara recounted how Mohammed, despite being a former minister, lacked the financial resources to fund his governorship bid. He revealed that Wike not only influenced the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries in Mohammed’s favor but also provided him with the financial and logistical support needed to win the election. The former Speaker emphasized that many, including himself, who supported Mohammed’s governorship ambition, were surprised to learn that he had no money for his campaign.
