Governor Alia Engages Stakeholders to End Killings in Otukpo, Benue

Benue State, Nigeria — Governor Hyacinth Alia has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to addressing the escalating security challenges across the state, especially in Zone C, which includes Otukpo. Strategic Meeting with Traditional Rulers and Community Leaders Governor Alia recently met with the Och’Idoma (the paramount traditional ruler of Idoma land) and other key stakeholders in Otukpo in a high-level dialogue aimed at finding lasting solutions to the persistent violence plaguing the area. During his visit, he also paid a condolence visit to the family of a young man who was brutally murdered by unidentified attackers in his home. “We are committed to implementing strategic and practical steps that will guarantee the safety of lives and property,” Alia stated.“This is the beginning of a broader dialogue, and I call on all residents of Benue to stay united and support the efforts of the state government.” Focus on Unity and Proactive Collaboration Governor Alia emphasized the importance of unity and proactive community engagement as essential tools in defeating the current wave of insecurity. He assured the people that his administration is leaving no stone unturned in the mission to restore peace across all affected communities. Rising Security Tensions in Otukpo and Environs Despite the government’s efforts, the security crisis continues to escalate. Barely 24 hours after the governor’s meeting, a Benue Links transport bus was hijacked by armed men in the Ikobi area. Tragically, two people were killed, and the rest of the passengers were kidnapped. Similarly, just the night before, a security guard at Otobi Dam was killed in an attack suspected to have been carried out by herdsmen. These violent incidents have further intensified fears and frustration among residents. Lawmaker Calls for Community Action In response to the latest attacks, Angbo Kennedy, the lawmaker representing Otukpo/Akpa in the Benue State House of Assembly, called on constituents to begin considering self-defense strategies as the government intensifies efforts to curb the menace. “Our people must be alert and take precautions. The situation calls for community vigilance while we support government initiatives,” Kennedy said. Benue Lawmaker Urges President Tinubu to Address Rising Insecurity in Otukpo

Lawmaker Calls for Urgent Intervention Over Rising Insecurity in Otukpo Blessing Onuh, the representative of Otukpo-Ohimini Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has made a passionate appeal to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to address the worsening security crisis in Otukpo, Benue State. A State of Emergency in Otukpo Onuh described the ongoing violence, including frequent attacks and killings, as a national emergency that demands immediate intervention. She expressed deep concern over the rising number of violent incidents in her constituency, pointing to the brutal murder of retired customs officer Onche Akatu in Asa 2 community. During the same attack, two of Akatu’s family members were kidnapped, adding to the growing insecurity in the region. Series of Tragic Killings The lawmaker also condemned the murder of Mrs. Felicia Ochigbo, a nursing mother, in the Old NTA Area of Asa, and an Igbo man in the community. These killings come just weeks after suspected herdsmen allegedly killed five men in Okpomoju Community, Okete Ward, Otukpo Local Government Area, causing widespread fear among residents. Lack of Action by Security Agencies Onuh expressed frustration over what she sees as the failure of security agencies to take concrete action. She criticized the repeated assurances from local and state officials who claim to be “on top of the matter” but fail to produce meaningful results. She questioned why the perpetrators remain at large and why the government has not restored peace, leaving residents to live in fear. Impact on Farmers and Food Security The persistent violence has forced many farmers to flee their farmlands, worsening food shortages in the region. This situation threatens economic stability, as agriculture is a major source of livelihood in Otukpo and surrounding areas. A Call for Presidential Action In her appeal to President Tinubu, Onuh urged the federal government to take decisive steps to strengthen security measures in Otukpo. She called for a heightened presence of security forces to ensure that criminals are apprehended and brought to justice. She also advised community members, particularly the youth, to avoid taking the law into their own hands through jungle justice or reprisal attacks, emphasizing that such actions would only worsen the crisis.
