The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has alleged that the ongoing crisis within the party at the national level is being fueled by its 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, rather than the National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure. According to the Edo State Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Kelly Ogbaloi Ativie, the political turmoil and internal wrangling currently affecting the party nationwide did not originate from the leadership of Abure. Instead, he insisted that Peter Obi’s actions and influence were the major catalysts behind the division. Ativie explained that the Labour Party was once seen as a united political platform that grew in popularity during the 2023 general elections, largely because of the “Obidient Movement.” However, since then, internal disputes have persisted, creating factions and mistrust among party members. He noted that while Julius Abure has been consistently accused of mismanaging the party, much of the unrest is tied to Obi’s inability to properly manage his political followers and align them with the broader party structure. The Edo chairman also emphasized that the national leadership of the party has been unfairly blamed for challenges that, in reality, arose from Obi’s growing influence and failure to integrate his loyalists into the party’s existing framework. Ativie stated that this has created confusion, weakening the Labour Party’s strength at both state and national levels. Furthermore, Ativie maintained that for the Labour Party to regain stability, all stakeholders must recognize the root cause of the ongoing crisis and address it truthfully. He argued that pointing fingers only at Abure while ignoring Obi’s role in the turmoil will not solve the problem. The political atmosphere in Abia State witnessed a significant shift on Friday as Governor Alex Otti of Abia State officially welcomed 66 notable politicians from different political parties into the Labour Party (LP) alongside their numerous supporters. The event took place at Obehie Central School in Ukwa West Local Government Area, signaling a historic moment in the state’s political realignment. For decades, Ukwa West LGA has been the political stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where the umbrella party continuously dominated elections from 1999 up until 2023. However, the tide appears to be changing as prominent PDP members and other opposition figures have now aligned themselves with the Labour Party. Among the new entrants into LP are Adinigwe Ugochukwu Nwoke, former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly; Ngozi Ulunwa, former Secretary to the State Government; Ralph Egbu, Uche Nwaele, Ugoeze Ogbonna, Lucky Ejiogu, and several other influential grassroots politicians. These defectors, who previously operated under the banners of PDP, APGA, and other political parties, have now pledged loyalty to Governor Otti’s vision and leadership. Governor Otti’s Remark at the Reception While addressing the crowd, Governor Otti expressed heartfelt gratitude to the new members and encouraged others who are yet to make a decision to seize the opportunity before it is too late. In his words:“I truly welcome our new members and their loyal supporters. For those who are still in doubt, I urge you to join us now before the train leaves the station.” The Governor emphasized that his administration remains committed to restoring the dignity of the Abia people. As part of this commitment, he announced plans to construct a mini-stadium in Ukwa West LGA, directing the Mayor of the Council to carry out land surveys and ensure the proposed site is fenced for immediate development. Furthermore, Otti appealed to the Obehie community to cooperate with the Inner Galaxy Company regarding the siting of a skills acquisition centre in Obehie. He stressed the need for unity and understanding, urging stakeholders to set aside disagreements over the project’s location, as the initiative is aimed at equipping youths with practical skills for self-reliance. Labour Party Leaders React Speaking at the ceremony, the Acting Chairman of LP in Abia State, Nwaeze Oti, praised the Governor for his achievements since assuming office. He explained that Otti’s outstanding performance and people-focused governance are the key reasons why the Labour Party continues to attract defectors and new supporters across Abia State. President Tinubu used the opportunity to propose that the APC congresses be rescheduled to December 2025. He explained that the delay would provide an opportunity for more opposition members to join the ruling party, signaling a strategic political move to widen APC’s influence ahead of the next general elections. In a statement released on Friday, the faction’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, condemned the gathering, declaring it illegal and emphasizing that Governor Otti is now politically isolated. The faction further criticized Otti, urging him to prioritize channeling Abia State’s funds and efforts towards state development instead of focusing on what they described as “insignificant matters.” Previously, LMSINT MEDIA had reported on the controversial NEC meeting where Senator Usman Nenadi was appointed as the Interim National Chairman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha was named Interim National Secretary, with several others forming the interim working committee. The Abure-led group stated that it is apparent Governor Otti and his supporters should now understand that the Labour Party has moved forward, concentrating on preparations for the 2027 general elections, irrespective of their participation. The statement also suggested that Otti may be unaware of his declining political influence, as a significant number of his supporters and key political figures have allegedly distanced themselves from him. The former SSA on Public Affairs, Aliyu Audu, revealed that despite serving for nearly two years in the administration as one of the president’s spokesmen, he was never granted a personal meeting with Tinubu. Recently, Audu stepped down from his role, officially resigning a few weeks ago. He criticized President Tinubu for choosing to meet with popular Nigerian musician David Adeleke, professionally known as Davido, and Lagos politician Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, commonly called Jandor, while continuously denying him access. I never got the chance to have a face-to-face with him. I was one of his spokespersons, yet he sat down with Davido, who had even insulted him some weeks before, and then also met Jandor, who did not even come second in the Lagos gubernatorial election. It simply does not add up.” Just days before Audu officially left his position, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State — who is also Davido’s uncle — had paid a courtesy visit to President Tinubu in Lagos. It is worth remembering that in March, Jandor, who was the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the 2023 Lagos State governorship contest, had also visited the president shortly after leaving the PDP.
