Skales Recounts Being Compelled to Perform in Police Custody

Nigerian artist Skales recently shared a harrowing account of being coerced into performing his hit songs while detained in a police cell. In an interview with Zikoko Media, Skales detailed the circumstances that led to his arrest and the events that unfolded during his time in custody. The Arrest and Detention Skales recounted that he and his manager were arrested following a dispute involving a Nigerian billionaire. Although the issue primarily concerned his manager, Skales chose to accompany him to the police station, believing it unjust for his manager to face the situation alone. Upon arrival, Skales was unexpectedly detained and placed in a cell. Performing Behind Bars Inside the cell, fellow inmates recognized Skales and requested that he perform his popular tracks “Shake Body” and “Emergency.” In exchange for a more comfortable sleeping arrangement—a mat instead of the bare floor—Skales agreed to their request. He described the experience as humiliating but complied to ensure his safety and comfort during detention. An Offer of Violence During his time in the cell, one inmate, upon hearing the circumstances of Skales’ arrest, offered to retaliate against the billionaire responsible. Skales declined the offer, emphasizing that he did not wish harm upon anyone and preferred to resolve matters peacefully. Reflections on the Experience Skales expressed his dismay at the situation, highlighting the misuse of power by influential individuals and the complicity of law enforcement. He noted that detainees often rely on their families to provide funds for basic necessities, such as food, during incarceration. Upon his release, Skales showed gratitude by providing food for the inmates he left behind.
