Akpabio Urges Nigerians to Embrace Unity and Strengthen Democracy

Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, President of the Senate, has urged Nigerians to prioritize national unity, vigilance, and active civic engagement as the nation celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance. Acknowledging the resilience of the Nigerian people, Akpabio commended citizens for their unwavering commitment to democracy, even during challenging periods. In a Democracy Day statement signed by his Media Adviser, Hon. Eseme Sunday Eyiboh, the Senate President emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic journey exemplifies endurance and determination, despite occasional setbacks. “On behalf of the 10th National Assembly, I extend heartfelt congratulations to every Nigerian for sustaining democracy for nearly three decades. Mistakes have occurred along the way, but with your continued support, we will reach our national aspirations,” Akpabio stated. He encouraged Nigerians to trust in democratic governance and resist attempts by regressive elements aiming to undermine the democratic process. According to him, “Democracy extends beyond elections; it must be rooted in accountability, justice, empathy, and service to the common good.” Youth Participation: The Bedrock of Nigeria’s Future Leadership Highlighting the pivotal role of the youth, Akpabio stressed the importance of active political participation among younger generations, describing them as the cornerstone of future leadership succession. “As we celebrate June 12, I urge young Nigerians not to remain passive observers. Engage actively in political processes, because the youth will shape the leadership of tomorrow,” he emphasized. He further called for a renewed commitment to freedom, transparency, accountable governance, social justice, and active citizen involvement, particularly from young Nigerians. Confronting Insecurity: Unity and Cooperation Needed On the issue of insecurity, Akpabio appealed for national solidarity, urging citizens to cooperate with government efforts aimed at curbing violence and restoring safety. He reassured Nigerians that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration remains dedicated to tackling terrorism and securing the release of all abducted individuals. “I call on every Nigerian to support President Tinubu’s initiatives against terrorism. We understand the challenges faced by citizens, but the government remains steadfast, and with collective effort, peace and security will prevail,” Akpabio affirmed
