In a move that has sparked widespread dissatisfaction, operators of Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals have increased their charges, following the implementation of the Federal Inland Revenue Service’s (FIRS) Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL). This N50 levy applies to any electronic transfer of N10,000 or more, in line with the new tax regulations. Starting December 1, 2024, several fintech platforms, including Moniepoint, PalmPay, and OPay, began notifying their customers of the N50 charge on any electronic inflow of N10,000 or more. The levy, part of the Finance Act 2020, is designed to bring more electronic transactions under the scope of the Stamp Duty Act. Moniepoint clarified in an email that the N50 charge will be applied to inflows above N10,000, but emphasized that the company does not benefit from the levy. Instead, it is collected by Moniepoint and remitted to the FIRS. PalmPay echoed this, stating that the levy, effective November 30, 2024, would be remitted directly to the federal government. Some POS operators, however, are struggling with the impact of the levy, particularly in regions with limited cash availability. Kazeem Adewale, a POS operator in Ogun State, voiced his frustrations, explaining that many customers are upset about the increase in charges. Other operators, such as Mrs. Helen Faniran in Ondo, shared that the cost of acquiring cash from local vendors has increased, leading to higher transaction fees. In your efforts to win souls, disciple new converts and bring them to church, there’re those who may never accept your message or agree to join your local fellowship; don’t be discouraged. Take a cue from how God dealt with the world. First, Jesus took His message to the Jews, His own people, for He came from among them. He brought them the message of the Kingdom but they rejected Him. What did He do? He then took the message to the Gentiles—to the rest of the world. And even today, many continue to receive that message. Paul experienced the same thing. As a Jew, he first preached to the Jews, but they argued with him and rejected his message even though he was one of them. They knew him as the man who once persecuted Christians, and when he turned to Christ, they wouldn’t listen to him. Many of them even turned against him. But Paul didn’t let that stop him. When the Jews wouldn’t accept his message, he turned to the Gentiles and had great success. Your focus should be on those who are open to receive the Gospel. Luke captured some of these. In Acts 13:46, for example, the Bible says, “Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.” Also, Acts 18:6 tells us, “And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.” Apply the same principle. Don’t allow those who reject your message to determine the condition of your spirit or your mood. Pray for them, intercede on their behalf, but don’t let their rejection control your heart. Focus on winning others. As you succeed in reaching more people, one day, those who rejected your message will be provoked by your success and drawn to Christ, just as the Bible tells us that the Jews will be provoked by the salvation of the Gentiles and eventually believe in Jesus Christ. Stay encouraged and press on; keep your focus on the mission, knowing that as you prosper in the work of the Lord, others will be drawn to your light. However, this ideology no longer aligns seamlessly with Nigeria’s current political and social dynamics. The South-East has produced prominent political leaders, including Senate Presidents like Evan Enwerem, Chuba Okadigbo, and Anyim Pius Anyim, alongside successful entrepreneurs and a strong national presence in commerce. In the 2023 elections, a presidential candidate from the South-East gained significant nationwide support, reflecting a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape. Global Lessons on the Futility of War The South-East must learn from ongoing conflicts like the Israel-Palestine war, the Ukraine-Russia war, and the Sudanese civil war, which have caused devastating humanitarian crises. Superpowers such as the United States and Iran, despite being arms suppliers, avoid direct confrontation to protect their territories. Similarly, European nations financing Ukraine’s resistance against Russia ensure the conflict does not spill over to their own lands. These wars illustrate how geopolitical struggles often serve as a testing ground for advanced weaponry while fueling the global arms market. The South-East should resist any attempt to be drawn into such destructive schemes. A Call for Reconciliation and National Unity For lasting progress, the South-East must move beyond the scars of the past and embrace reconciliation. National unity is achievable through dialogue, constructive political participation, and the pursuit of justice through lawful and peaceful mechanisms. Rather than focusing on historical grievances, the region should work collectively to safeguard its future, leveraging its industrious nature and significant contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD …who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (2 Timothy 1:10). The Bible records that in ancient times, humans lived for exceptionally long periods with lifespans exceeding 900 years. However, as sin increased, lifespans diminished. Genesis 6:3 says because of sin, man’s lifespan was limited to 120 years. Moses, in his psalms, made an observation that due to sin, the typical lifespan of man was seventy years or eighty for those who were stronger. Even in old age, man’s life was filled with toil and sorrow, ultimately ending in death (Psalm 90:8-10). The Lord Jesus, however, came to address the root cause of this limitation, which is sin. Through His sacrifice, He provided salvation from sin and made eternal life possible. Eternal life includes “deathlessness.” When you were born again, you passed from death to life (John 5:24). Recall what we read in our theme scripture; it says Jesus abolished death and brought life and immortality to light. To abolish means to do away with, to get rid of, or to cancel. The Lord Jesus cancelled death; He got rid of it and gave us a life that’s superior to death; a life that’s death-proof. Now you can understand why the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:55, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” The Lord Himself proved that death has no sting or victory when, after three days in the grave, He arose triumphantly back to life. Why then do Christians die? For many, it’s a result of ignorance (Psalm 82:5-7) and also because of the consciousness and fear of death. We’ll learn a bit more about the fear of death in our next study. You might ask, “Pastor Chris, are you saying we are not supposed to die?” Absolutely! We have the potential to live beyond the confines of earthly limitations. The Bible lets us know that many of us will be alive and physically raptured from the earth when the trumpet sounds (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). The Church needs to grasp and walk in the light of this truth. The life you have is the God-life, the divine life; it’s not subject to Satan, sickness, disease, death and the corrupting influences of this world. 2 Peter 1:4 says we’re partakers of the divine nature and have escaped the corruption that’s in the world. Death is one of those “corruptions” from which you’ve been extricated. Hallelujah! CONFESSION I refuse to be bound by the consciousness of death or the limitations of this world. I walk in the fullness of the life and victory that Christ has obtained for me, and I live in health, strength and vitality. I live out the transcendent life, demonstrating the power and glory of God in all areas of my life, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
