A coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) has raised serious allegations against Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, a company led by Chief Oweizidei Thomas Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo. CSOs Demand Investigation into Tantita Security’s Activities During a press conference on Wednesday, following a peaceful protest at Shoprite, Alausa, Lagos, the CSOs released a statement signed by their Convener, Comrade Abe Emmanuel. The coalition urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action by investigating these allegations to prevent further human rights abuses. The CSOs acknowledged the Tinubu administration’s focus on economic recovery, governance reforms, and the protection of fundamental rights since assuming office. This reckless act of betrayal exposes the depths of some individuals’ desperation, showing how far they will go to abandon their dignity and heritage for fleeting rewards. No amount of denial can erase the damage done. When someone cries in the night and a life is lost by dawn, the culprit is often right in front of us. The Root Cause of Betrayal: Greed and Ambition What could possibly justify such an act of disgrace? The answer lies in the shameful combination of greed and blind ambition. The Niger Delta, a region long steeped in political struggles, has attracted opportunists ready to exploit internal divisions. In this case, a Warri son betrayed his heritage for an oil surveillance contract. Rather than protecting the honor of his people, he chose to align with forces that have consistently undermined the Warri Kingdom. In doing so, he dragged the sacred stool of the Olu into international disrepute. We must remember: a bird does not forget its nest, just as we should never forget the dignity of our ancestors and their throne. A Long History of Betrayal for Quick Gains This betrayal is not an isolated case. For years, individuals driven by ambition have abandoned tradition for the illusion of financial success. To them, the throne has ceased to be a symbol of honor; instead, it is a bargaining chip to be exchanged for wealth, influence, or political leverage. These actions serve only to strengthen external forces that wish to divide and weaken the Warri Kingdom. By publicly undermining the integrity of the Olu’s stool, these individuals provide ammunition to those who seek to sow discord among the Itsekiri people. The Dire Consequences of Betrayal The consequences of such betrayal are grave. A throne that is ridiculed publicly loses its authority. A house built on sand cannot stand, and a divided kingdom becomes vulnerable to outside manipulation. History teaches us that those who betray their people for temporary gains are often left forgotten, their fleeting rewards rendered meaningless. What, then, did this individual truly gain? A short-lived contract or a handful of foreign currency? Was it worth the dishonor and the permanent stain on his family’s reputation? Itsekiri People Must Stand Against Betrayal The Itsekiri people cannot afford to remain silent in the face of such betrayal. The sacred stool of the Olu of Warri is not a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder. Those who choose to serve external interests at the cost of their heritage must face consequences—both from their people and from history. Crude oil theft remains a significant issue in Nigeria, with security operatives—who are supposed to prevent the crime—reportedly facilitating and profiting from the illegal trade. Investigations reveal that oil thieves pay levies to build refining camps and receive protection, while armed personnel escort stolen crude shipments under the cover of night. Despite the efforts of security firms like Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), oil theft continues due to deep-rooted corruption within the system. Security Forces Enabling Oil Bunkering Leaked Intelligence and Bribery Former oil bunkerers have exposed how some security personnel, including military officers, facilitate and profit from crude oil theft. These officials not only accept bribes to protect illegal operations but also leak intelligence to oil thieves, warning them of impending raids. According to a former oil bunkerer in Delta State, Fumilayo: “The Navy coordinated our business from the start. We paid them before setting up refining camps and for every boatload of crude we moved. If you don’t settle them, they will destroy your camp.” Some of these illegal camps are reportedly owned by both serving and retired military officers who employ skilled artisans and locals to refine stolen crude. Oil Theft Routes and Security Involvement Edo State: Midnight Escorts for Oil Smugglers In Edo State, armed personnel reportedly escort stolen crude shipments through oil palm plantations to avoid detection. A former insider disclosed: “They disguised petroleum product movements as regular plantation transport. This ensured safe passage after negotiations with security officers.” The Gelegele–Ofunama axis is a well-known smuggling route where oil thieves transport diesel in drums, jerricans, and specially designed containers between 1 AM and 3 AM. Local vigilante groups are also sometimes compromised to allow free passage. Akwa Ibom: Settling Security Commanders An ex-agitator in Akwa Ibom revealed two primary methods of crude oil theft: He explained: “To operate freely, you must settle security commanders. These commanders control access to key locations, and without their approval, your activities are at risk.” Bunkerers often pay over ₦100,000 in tolls at various security checkpoints along river routes. Insider Leaks and Protection for Oil Thieves Nimi Brador, a former supervisor of an illegal refining camp in Rivers and Bayelsa, stated that local community informants and security operatives acted as spies for oil thieves. “Before the military arrived, we would be warned by insiders. Some security officials also owned illegal refining camps.” TSSNL operatives investigating these cases confirm that high-ranking security officials frequently obstruct crackdowns. Security Agencies’ Crackdown on Oil Theft Despite these deep-rooted networks, the Nigerian military and security agencies have intensified efforts to dismantle illegal refining sites. In recent operations across Edo, Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, they:✅ Dismantled 13 illegal bunkering hubs✅ Seized 300,000 liters of stolen crude✅ Arrested 15 oil thieves✅ Destroyed over 150 makeshift refining ovens Major Arrests and Recoveries ? Edo State: 252,000 liters of stolen crude oil recovered in Ugo Community.? Delta State: A 30,000-liter tanker siphoning crude intercepted.? Rivers State: Multiple refining sites dismantled along the Imo River.? Akwa Ibom: Over 30 polythene bags of illegally refined diesel seized. The fight against oil theft is ongoing, but the involvement of security operatives in the crime raises concerns about the effectiveness of these crackdowns. The Road Ahead: Curbing Oil Theft in Nigeria Stakeholders believe that organizations like TSSNL have significantly reduced oil theft. Ateke Tom: From Militant Leader to Amanyanabo of Okochiri Ateke Michael Tom, once the leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante (NDV), was known for his clashes with rival militias and security forces. However, after embracing the 2009 amnesty program, he transformed into a peace advocate. In 2017, then-Governor Nyesom Wike crowned him the first Amanyanabo of Okochiri Town, Rivers State. His leadership has since contributed significantly to the stability of the Okrika region. Dokubo-Asari: Leading Torusarama Piri Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, a vocal figure from the Kalabari ethnic group, transitioned from militant leader to the Amanyanabo of Torusarama Piri in December 2024. Formerly the head of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), he played a key role in reducing oil theft and securing peace in the region. His kingship was endorsed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, further consolidating his influence in Rivers State politics. Henry Binidodogha: Ojuaga I of Egbema Clan Henry Binidodogha, also known as Egbema I, was crowned the Ojuaga I of Egbema Clan in Edo State in 2018. His kingship, endorsed by seven major Egbema communities, followed his involvement in the 2009 amnesty. Despite some disputes over traditional claims with the Oba of Benin, Binidodogha remains focused on uniting his people and promoting peace. Failed Attempt: Selky Torughedi in Bayelsa Not all former militants have successfully ascended traditional thrones. In Bayelsa, Selky Kile Torughedi, also known as Young Shall Grow, attempted to claim the paramount ruler title in Azuzuama Kingdom. However, community leaders opposed his ascension, leading to a court injunction preventing him from ruling. Delta and Akwa Ibom: No Monarchs Yet Unlike Rivers, Edo, and Bayelsa, Delta and Akwa Ibom States have yet to witness the rise of ex-militants as traditional rulers. Some former agitators have received honorary chieftaincy titles for their positive contributions to society but have not been crowned as monarchs. Efforts to clamp down on crude oil theft in the Niger Delta Region (NDR) have achieved remarkable success as troops intensified anti-bunkering operations. Between December 9-15, 2024, military forces deactivated 42 illegal oil refinery sites, arrested 29 suspected oil thieves, and confiscated over 197,000 litres of stolen crude oil, according to a statement from the Nigerian Army. In addition to the stolen crude, security forces seized 32 boats, 12 vehicles, and eight motorcycles believed to have been used in acts of economic sabotage. In a decisive effort to combat oil theft and protect Nigeria’s resources, the Nigerian Army has successfully dismantled 19 illegal refining sites and confiscated over 170,000 litres of stolen Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in a series of operations across the Niger Delta. Collaborative Crackdown Between December 2 and 8, 2024, troops from the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division, working in collaboration with other security agencies, executed targeted operations aimed at dismantling oil theft networks. The operations resulted in significant arrests, seizure of equipment, and recovery of stolen resources. According to Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, the operations also led to the demobilisation of 21 boats used in crude theft and the confiscation of various tools used for illegal oil bunkering. The Nigerian Army has reported the capture of a notorious terrorist leader, Abubakar Ibrahim, also known as Habu Dogo, in the North West. This success, achieved as part of ongoing counter-terrorism operations, marks a significant step in weakening the operational capacity of terrorist groups across the country, as noted in a statement from Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations. Habu Dogo, who is on the watch list of security agencies in both Nigeria and Niger for his cross-border activities, was arrested in Rumji Village, located in Illela Local Government Area, Sokoto State. Additionally, in the South East, security forces apprehended seven commanders and members of the IPOB/ESN, including individuals such as Dr. Nnamdi Chukwudoze and Chigozie Ezetoha, known as Chapet, in Anambra State. Others detained include Ngozi Chukwuka and Oyekachi Ohia in Abia, as well as Ifeanyi Eze, Augustine Udemba, and Onyedikachi Udemba in Umunneochi, Abia. Another individual, Elijah Mmaduipeya Obumneke, was captured in Orsu, Imo State. Throughout this period, 187 insurgents were neutralized, and 262 individuals were detained. Additionally, 39 oil thieves were apprehended, and 147 kidnapped individuals were rescued. In the South-South region, troops prevented oil theft valued at approximately N1.2 billion and recovered a variety of weapons and ammunition, including 205 firearms and over 5,000 rounds of ammunition. Operations in the Niger Delta region led to the destruction of 49 illegal oil cooking ovens, numerous storage facilities, and 98 unauthorized refining sites.
